San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - San Diego Gulls netminder Tyler Weiman has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Jan. 1 - Jan. 8. Weiman was selected as a runner-up for the award two of the previous three weeks.

The 21-year-old was 2-0-0 with a 1.26 goals-against average and .960 save percentage in four appearances last week for the Gulls, who moved into a second-place tie with Long Beach in the Pacific Division.

Weiman stopped 31 of 32 shots Friday in San Diego's 2-1 victory over Idaho and then made 34 saves in the Gulls' 6-2 triumph over Utah Saturday. Weiman stopped the only shot he faced Wednesday against Alaska when he relieved Tom Lawson for the final 3:15 of the second period. He also played the third period Sunday against the Aces, turning aside all six shots faced.

Overall, the 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder from Lloydminster, Alberta is 8-8-2 with a 2.74 GAA (tied for 10th in the ECHL) and .909 save percentage. After getting off to a 1-6-1 start, Weiman is 7-2-1 since with a 2.01 GAA and .933 save percentage.

The Colorado Avalanche, San Diego's NHL affiliate, originally assigned Weiman to the Gulls in early October. He spent portions of training camp with both Colorado and the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters. Weiman made his AHL debut on Dec. 28, stopping 26 shots in Lowell's 4-2 victory against Providence.

Weiman spent last season (his rookie year) with the Central Hockey League's Colorado Eagles, posting a 33-6-5 record with a 1.80 goals-against average and .938 save percentage. He led the CHL in wins, GAA, save percentage and shutouts (eight), while being named the league's Outstanding Goaltender and Rookie of the Year. Weiman was Colorado's fifth round pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
