Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
Phoenix, Ariz. - Goaltender Mike Mole stopped all 35 shots he saw and the Phoenix RoadRunners snapped their eight-game losing streak with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Alaska Aces before 2,865 at US Airways Center in ECHL action Tuesday. The shutout was the first in RoadRunners ECHL history.
Phoenix (10-21-2) came out strong right from the opening face-off and was rewarded with a two-goal cushion heading into the first intermission. The RoadRunners opened the scoring at 8:50 of the first when Dean Tiltgen fed Ben Knopp in the slot and Knopp put a wrist shot through Alaska goaltender Matt Underhill's pads for a 1-0 lead. Mike Ouellet extended the lead to 2-0 with a power play goal at 14:56. Ouellet's shot from the blue line sneaked through Underhill's pads and trickled into the cage to give the RoadRunners the tally.
Despite five power plays in the second period and an 18-6 shot advantage, Alaska could not crack RoadRunners goaltender Mike Mole in the middle frame.
Joe Dusbabek sealed the win 4:45 into the third period. Dusbabek charged the net up the left side around the defense, and flipped the puck off Underhill's pads and into the cage to give the RoadRunners a 3-0 advantage.
Alaska out-shot Phoenix 35-28. Mole's shutout was the first of his professional career. He improved to 6-15-2 with the victory. The RoadRunners went 1-4 on the power play and held the Aces without a power play goal on nine chances.
