Idaho Steelheads News Release

Bakersfield, California - Three, first period goals and two more tallies in the second period allowed the Bakersfield Condors to cruise to a 5-1 victory over the Steelheads at Rabobank Arena on Monday night.

The home team took their 3-0 first period lead in a variety of ways. Sean Venedam's shorthanded goal and Reagan Leslie's power play goal allowed the Condors (13-11-4) to take a two-goal advantage before the contest was 10 minutes old. Then, Kevin Truelson's even-strength marker at 16:10 of the opening stanza allowed the Condors to lead by three at intermission.

Venedam's goal came off a turnover by Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (19 saves). Silverthorn misplayed the puck behind his net, allowing Andrew Ianiero to feed Venedam who beat Silverthorn over his shoulder. Leslie's power play goal, his second of the year, also came off a failed clear by the visitors. Venedam got the lone assist. After Leslie's marker, Silverthorn was pulled for just 45 seconds. Matt Yeats came in and stopped the only shot he faced before Silverthorn came back to man the pipes. Truelson's shot that put the Steelheads behind by three was a wrist shot from the slot that caromed off a couple of bodies.

The Steelheads (20-11-2) had opportunities in the first period, mustering nine shots. They also had four power play chances, but failed to convert.

The Condors tacked on two more goals in the second period. Moments after the Steelheads failed to score on a five-minute major power play, Venedam notched his second of the evening. Kevin St. Jacques and Leslie assisted on his 14th marker of the season.

Exactly four minutes later, the Condors made it 5-0 as Ianiero recorded his sixth of the season. Justin Quenneville and Joel Irving added the helpers.

At the second intermission, the Condors led 5-0, despite trailing in shots 21-19.

Rookie Kevin Gardner netted the only goal of the third period, allowing the Steelheads to avoid being shutout. Gardner scored on the power play after Greg Hornby's initial shot was kicked out by Condors' goaltender Ryan Munce (31 saves).

The Steelheads finished just one for 10 on the power play, while the Condors went one for eight. The final shots were 32-24 in favor of the Steelheads, as they dropped to 15-5-1 when out-shooting the opposition.

The loss means the Steelheads remain in a tie with the Utah Grizzlies for third place in the West Division.

The Steelheads conclude their four-game road trip as they travel to Stockton to take on the Thunder on Tuesday, January 10. Faceoff is at 8:00 p.m. MST.
