SPRINGFIELD, MA - Three unanswered goals in the third period carried the Springfield Falcons over the Manchester Monarchs 4-1 in front of 2,488 fans at the MassMutual Center on Wednesday night.
Manchester (6-8-1-1) is in sixth place in the Atlantic Division with 14 points. Springfield (10-5-1-3) is in second place in the Atlantic Division with 24 points.
Left wing Ben Simon broke the 1-1 tie at 1:21 of the third period to put the Falcons ahead. Left wing Tim Sestito carried the puck into the Monarchs zone and fired a shot on net from the top of the left wing circle. Goaltender Dan Cloutier made the pad save but redirected the puck to his left as Simon was streaking to the net and chipped the puck into the net with a one-timer. Right wing Troy Bodie earned an assist on Simon's third tally of the season.
The Falcons started the scoring 41-seconds into the second period as center Patrick Thoresen scored his 10th goal of the season. In the left face-off circle, center Rob Schremp picked up a pass from defenseman Sebastien Bisaillon as Springfield cycled the puck on the power play. Schremp found Thoresen on the right doorstep of the goal. Thoresen controlled the puck, turned and shot it over Cloutier's left shoulder for the first goal of the game.
The Monarchs tied the game at 1-1 with center Matt Ryan's second goal of the season and second tally in as many games. The Falcons attempted to clear the puck from their zone but instead it landed on Ryan's stick in the right face-off circle. Ryan carried the puck toward the net before releasing a wrist shot that traveled between goaltender Jeff Deslauriers' body and his blocker to even the score. Ryan's unassisted goal came at 15:39 of the middle frame.
Springfield scored three unanswered goals in the third period. Following Simon's game-winner, Thoresen tallied his second of the night at 4:19 of the final stanza. Thoresen was fed the puck for a breakaway from right wing Colin McDonald as he was checked into the right wing boards by defenseman Brian Boyle. Thoresen skated in toward Cloutier and blasted the puck five-hole for his 11th goal of the season.
Center Fredrik Johansson finished off the Monarchs at 5:35 of the third period with his second goal of the season. Johansson collected the puck from left wing Liam Reddox and snapped a quick wrist shot into the top of the net for the 4-1 final.
Cloutier took the loss stopping 16 shots. Deslauriers earned the win with 33 saves.
Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Springfield was 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
