Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
Wilkes-Barre, PA - Three straight games, three straight shutouts.
But the third was a little bit better for the Penguins.
Ty Conklin made 28 saves and a half dozen skaters netted goals, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 6-0 win against the Worcester Sharks in a pre-Thanksgiving feast at the Wachovia Arena Wednesday.
The win put an end to the Pens' two-game losing streak, during which they were shut out in back-to-back games for the first time in four years.
One event in the game tells you all you need to know about how this contest went: Penguins defenseman Ryan Lannon picked up his first goal in 128 games - and it was a shorthanded tally.
The home squad came out flying in the first period, pelting Dmitri Patzold with 14 shots in the opening 20 minutes. But for the seventh straight stanza, the flightless birds couldn't get off the ground.
Then, the flood gates opened.
Deryk Engelland lit up a shot from the point that deflected off a Worcester defender and beat Patzold backdoor at 1:28.
Connor James upped the lead t 2-0 a minute and a half later, picking up a loose puck behind the Sharks net and stuffing it between Patzold's left skate and the near post for his fourth of the season.
A great individual effort by Alex Goligoski saw the Pens get the puck deep in the Sharks end, and his backhand pass from the right dot found Kurtis McLean at the top of the crease. Mac tapped home his third of the campaign at 4:43, giving the Penguins their largest single-period goal output of the season.
But three wasn't enough for the home squad.
McLean and Nasreddine found themselves on a two-on-one 12:30 into the period, with the former controlling the puck over the blueline. McLean fed Nasreddine in the slot, and his wrister found the back of the net, giving Nasreddine his second goal of the season.
Tim Brent made it 5-0 11 minutes into the third, pulling a puck around a Sharks defender then backhanding home his first goal as a Penguin into the upper regions of the Worcester cage.
Lannon finished off the scoring with his shot from the slot. It was his first goal since Dec. 28, 2005, the third of his AHL career, and his second shorthanded.
The Penguins return to action on Friday night, when they host the Binghamton Senators at 7:05pm.
NOTES: Deryk Engelland and Tim Brent also notched their first goals of the season in the game...Chris Minard (0+2), McLean (1+1), Brent (1+1) and James (1+1) all posted multi-point games...The only Penguin without a shot on the night was Jonathan Filewich.
