Adirondack Phantoms News Release

NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals scored two goals in the opening minute en route to a five-goal first period and never looked back, taking a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms at Norfolk Scope on Wednesday night.

Norfolk's first goal came on a penalty shot 39 seconds into the game. Kyle Wanvig was on a breakaway when Alexandre Picard was whistled for a penalty while trying to restrict him from scoring. He lost control of the puck but just as he did. goaltender Brian Boucher was attempting a pokecheck. The puck ended up sliding past Boucher's leg and into the net for a 1-0 Admirals advantage.

Twelve seconds later, the Admirals scored again. They won the ensuing faceoff and charged into the Phantoms zone, with Blair Jones and Justin Keller exchanging passes. Keller made the final distribution and Jones, reaching behind his defender, deflected the puck past Boucher for the early 2-0 lead.

The Admirals took a 3-0 lead near the halfway point of the period on another goal by Jones, this time on the power play. Keller carried the puck into the left corner and played it into the circle for Justin Fletcher. He continued it along to Jones, who was crashing from the blue line and fired it home at 10:20.

The Admirals stretched their lead to 5-0 with two more quick goals late in the period. First it was Jeff Campbell with another power play goal at 18:23, followed by Craig MacDonald with an even strength tally at 18:55. Boucher gave way at that point to Scott Munroe.

Norfolk completed a six-goal run with just over seven minutes gone in the second period. Norm Milley provided the tally at 13:13.

The Phantoms showed some life after that, scoring three consecutive goals. Steve Downie scored his first professional goal at the 17:56 mark of the second period, deflecting home a point shot from Ryan Parent.

In the third period, the Phantoms appeared to be thinking about a comeback. At the 4:39 mark, Jared Ross scored on a shorthanded breakaway, and then Ryan Potulny set up Alexandre Picard from behind the net at 10:03.

But the Phantoms couldn't find any more goals, and Karl Stewart stole any momentum the Phantoms may have had with a power play goal with 1:38 left to play.

Boucher recorded the loss with five saves on ten shots faced, while Munroe stopped 10 of 12. Jonathan Boutin stopped 27 of 30 in recording the win.
