Albany Devils News Release

LOWELL, Mass. - Despite outshooting Portland 31-29, Pirate goaltender Gerald Coleman stopped all he faced to send the Lowell Devils away with a 3-0 loss at the Tsongas Arena on Wednesday evening.

The two teams skated through a scoreless first period with shots tied 7-7. Petr Vrana almost gave Lowell the lead at the 13-minute mark when he split the defense, but pushed the wrist shot just wide. In turn, the Pirates almost broke the scoreless tie right before the intermission on a breakaway by Jason King, but a diving stick check by Sean Zimmerman denied that chance.

The defensive battle and clutch goaltending continued into the middle stanza as Coleman stoned Vrana twice on mini-breakaways and then got a piece of Benoit Mondou's wrap-around later in the period. The Pirates finally drew first blood after 35:09 of scoreless hockey with the help of their second-ranked power play unit in the league. Brian Salcido fed a pass from the point that made it through the zone to Andrew Ebbett on the far post, where he went diving across the crease before tucking the puck past Jordan Parise.

As the Devils pressured to knot the score in the waning minutes, Tyler Bouck put the game out of reach with 59 seconds left when he batted the rebound from Ebbett's stuff shot into the top corner. Salcido added an empty-net goal thirty seconds later to complete the scoring.

In one of the few games that Lowell went to the penalty box more than their opponent, the Devils were scoreless over three power plays and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Parise turned away 26 of 28 shots on the evening.

On Friday, November 23, fans have a chance to win a Nintendo Wii as the Lowell Devils battle the Albany River Rats at 7:05 p.m. The Devils finish the week on Sunday, November 25 with a tilt versus the Portland Pirates at 4:05 p.m. Following the game, join the Devils for a post-game skate sponsored by Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union and a team autograph session.
