Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK - The Norfolk Admirals (6-10-0-2) netted five first-period goals to tie a franchise record and hand the East Division leading Philadelphia Phantoms (14-3-1-0) only their third defeat of the season by a 7-3 score on Wednesday night at Scope Arena.

Kyle Wanvig gave Norfolk a quick 1-0 lead just 39 seconds into the game. After being tripped up on a breakaway, Wanvig was awarded a penalty shot. On the shot, Wanvig stumbled but shot the puck past Philadelphia netminder Brian Boucher as he fell to the ice and crashed into the boards. The tally gave Wanvig goals in six straight games, tying another Norfolk franchise record.

Blair Jones stretched the lead to 3-0 over the next ten minutes. Just 12 seconds after Wanvig's goal, Jones stuffed home the rebound of a Justin Keller shot for a goal at 0:51. Ten minutes later, Keller dropped a pass from the left half wall to Justin Fletcher in the corner. Fletcher passed to the opposite side of the crease where Jones poked it past Boucher at 10:20 for a power play goal.

Jeff Campbell tallied his first goal as an Admiral at 18:23 on an assist from Jones on the power play. Just 32 seconds later, 2006-07 Admirals captain Craig MacDonald brought the home crowd out of their seats again with his second goal of the season at 18:55. It marked the fifth time in franchise history that Norfolk had scored five goals in a single period.

Norm Milley gave Norfolk its sixth unanswered goal 13:13 into the second stanza. After crossing the blue line, he dropped a pass back to MacDonald who sent a slap shot on new Phantoms goaltender Scott Munroe. The rebound went to Milley at the bottom of the left circle and he backhanded it into the net.

The Phantoms cut their deficit in half with goals by Steve Downie at 17:56 of the second period, a shorthanded tally by Jared Ross at 4:39 of the final frame and an even-strength tally by Alexandre Picard at 10:03. However, Karl Stewart punctuated the game with a season-high seventh goal for Norfolk on the power play at 18:22.

Jonathan Boutin (31 shots, 28 saves) earned the victory. Brian Boucher (10 shots, 5 saves) got the loss through 18:55. Scott Munroe (12 shots, 10 saves) did not receive a decision in 41:05 of play.

The Admirals matched a season high with three power play goals on nine chances. Philadelphia was 0-3 with the man advantage.
