Indianapolis Indians News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - The Indianapolis Indians received seven strong innings from Jameson Taillon and home runs from Cole Figueroa and Alen Hanson, but the Syracuse Chiefs held on for the 3-2 victory on Monday evening.
Taillon (2-1) worked seven innings for the third consecutive start, and he threw a season-high 99 pitches. The right-hander conceded just three runs and fanned six opposing batters.
His counterpart, Taylor Hill (1-2), would also toss seven frames. He limited the Indians to just one run on four hits in the victory.
Syracuse (18-12) took the early lead in the second when Brian Goodwin clubbed a solo home run to right-center field. It was the third of the season for the Chiefs center fielder who is now batting .333 on the season.
The Indians (15-14) would level the score in the top of the fourth. Figueroa blasted his second home run with the Tribe, a homer that cleared the right-field wall with ease.
The game would not remain knotted for long, as the Chiefs went back in front in the bottom of the fourth. With two men aboard, Jason Martinson doubled to center field. Scott Sizemore scored on the play, and even though Matt Skole was thrown out at home plate, Syracuse re-claimed the lead.
The Chiefs picked up much needed insurance in the fifth when Hill helped his own cause and drove the ball to right field. It was eventually run down by Willy Garcia, but Pedro Severino tagged and scored from third to expand the Syracuse advantage to 3-1.
Hanson connected for his second long ball of the year to bring the Indians within a run at 3-2, but that would be the game's final margin.
The Tribe is currently on a seven-game road trip, and will play game two of that stretch on Tuesday evening. First pitch against the Chiefs is set for 6:35 p.m.
