Leon Tames Bulls for First Win of 2016
May 9, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
In just his second start of the season, Arnold Leon was nearly untouchable as the Bisons shutout out the Bulls, 3-0, at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Monday.
Leon took a perfect game into the fifth before issuing a leadoff walk to Richie Shaffer. The free pass was the only one handed out by the Mexican right-hander and was followed up by a Kyle Roller single - the only hit Leon allowed. The 27-year-old retired the next three batters, two via the strikeout, to end his night with a total of seven K's.
Chris Leroux was equally impressive taking over for Leon to start the bottom half of the sixth. The 6-foot-6 righty struck out the first three batters he faced, added two more in the seventh and another an inning later, finishing with six while allowing just one hit.
David Aardsma picked up his fourth save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth. The closer's pair of punch-outs gave the Herd's staff 15 on the night as the Bulls' anaemic offense failed to score a run for the sixth time this season.
Buffalo's attack gave Leon an early lead to work with before being blanked for seven innings.
Matt Dominguez's single to right in the first was followed up by a walk from Domonic Brown. Jesus Montero brought both baserunners home with a double to the gap in right-center field. Buffalo's designated hitter also reached on a pair of singles, going 3-for-4 on the night.
The Bisons added an insurance run in the ninth when Junior Lake's infield single was thrown away by Bulls' reliever Danny Farquhar, allowing Domonic Brown to score the third run of the evening.
Bulls' starter Justin Marks threw five innings as well but the two runs allowed were enough to earn the loss, bringing his record to 0-3.
Dylan Floro ate up a much-needed three scoreless innings of relief for Durham. The Bulls entered Monday's action having played three consecutive extra-inning games.
BISONS NOTES:
The victory was Buffalo's first in Durham since a 3-0 win on August 10, 2014...Matt Dominguez has a hit in 12 of his last 13 games at the Triple-A level...Jesus Montero's two RBI gives him 16 on the year, one back of Domonic Brown for the team lead...The Bisons are now a perfect 10-0 when outhitting their opponent...The Herd tied a season high by hitting into three double plays; the fifth time they have done so this year.
