Charlotte Holds off Tides
May 9, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Dariel Alvarez had two hits and an RBI, but Charlotte used a big first inning to knock off Norfolk 5-3 Monday night from Harbor Park.
Alvarez singled in the fourth before plating a run with an RBI double in the eighth inning to help pace Norfolk's nine-hit attack. He's now hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, over which he's batted .271 (16-59) with four doubles and eight runs batted in. Alvarez also threw out a runner at home plate in the sixth inning, his team-leading fourth outfield assist of the season.
Trey Mancini singled twice in the setback, while Christian Walker singled, scored a run and drove in a run with a bases loaded walk. Xavier Avery reached base three times via a single and two walks, as he's now hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games with an at-bat.
The Knights wasted little time in jumping on Norfolk starter Ariel Miranda (1-2), as Charlotte sent seven men to the plate in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Matt Davidson got the Knights on the board with an RBI single, and Danny Hayes later followed with a two-out, three-run homer to right field.
Miranda yielded four runs on four hits over 3.2 innings of work, walking three and striking out three. He needed 85 pitches to navigate his outing - 37 of which came in the decisive first inning.
Chris Volstad (2-2) earned the win for Charlotte, while Tommy Kahnle recorded the final four outs to earn his second save of the season.
The two clubs will continue their series Tuesday at Harbor Park with a doubleheader set to begin at 5:05. In game one, T.J. McFarland is slated to make his 2016 Tides debut while Odrisamer Despaigne (0-4, 5.10) is scheduled to start the nightcap.
Notes: Jimmy Paredes singled and scored a run in four at-bats in his first game with Norfolk on a Major League rehab assignment...Scott McGough, who was outrighted to Norfolk from Baltimore earlier Monday, allowed one run on three hits while striking out three in 2.1 innings of relief...Corban Joseph went 0-for-4 with an RBI groundout, snapping his hitting streak at 21 games between Bowie and Norfolk...Sharlon Schoop singled in four at-bats and is now hitting .375 (12-32) in nine games this season.
