SWB Game Notes

May 9, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

YESTERDAY: The RailRiders' bid for a second straight comeback win fell just short on Mother's Day Sunday as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies) escaped PNC Field with a 5-4 victory. The RailRiders and IronPigs (15-14) split the two-game weekend set and once again stand in a virtual tie for second place behind the Syracuse Chiefs in the IL North.

SOL MAN: With Ben Gamel's MLB promotion, Donovan Solano has emerged as the new regular leadoff man. He doubled, narrowly missing a home run, and drove in a tally on a 2-for-5 day with a run scored. Over his last 14 games he has gone 18-for-55 (.327). Solano is the only RailRider to lead off this season other than Gamel, having spelled him four times before taking the role outright in each of SWB's last four games.

CHAIN: Chris Parmelee began the year in a 2-for-26 (.077) funk with no extra-base hits, one RBI and 10 strikeouts. He has since gone 21-for-59 with eight extra-base knocks, seven RBIs, eight walks and 13 runs scored over 16 games, slashing .356/.433/.559/.992. He finished yesterday 2-for-4 with a run scored.

DUAL THREAT: Gary Sanchez owns the IL lead in doubles and ranks second with 17 extra-base hits: 11-2B, 1-3B, 5HR. A .175 bat after his first 10 games, he has since gone 21-for-59 with 11 extra-base hits and 14 RBIs in 14 games played, slashing .356/.397/.644/1.041 over 14 games. He delivered his team-best 20th RBI yesterday. He trails only Toledo's Steven Moya (23) for the IL lead. When he has been behind the plate, opposing base stealers have been caught eight times in 15 attempts (.533). Norfolk's Francisco Pena has identical numbers and the duo co-leads the IL. Sanchez has multiple hits in four of his last five games, going 11-for-24 with six extra-base hits (three homers) while slashing .458/.480/.958/1.438.

I AM THE LAW: Aaron Judge blasted his team-best sixth home run, an impressive shot that traveled well over 400 feet to centerfield. He ranks among the IL's best in homers (T-3rd), RBIs (T-3rd, 19), extra-base hits (T-3rd, 13) and total bases (T-2nd, 56). He caught Nick Williams napping at second base for a fly-ball double play yesterday. His five outfield assists pace the team and trail only Buffalo's Junior Lake (7) for the IL lead. He nailed the speedy Williams at home plate during a fly-ball double play on Saturday and retired Tommy Joseph at third base to end the fifth inning at Lehigh Valley on Friday night. Over his last 10 games, Judge has gone homered four times with 10 RBIs and seven walks against eight strikeouts.

R&R: Rob Refsnyder singled in the eighth inning to finish 1-for-4. He has reached safely in 16 straight games and owns the team's longest hitting streak of the season, a 12-gamer. He stands one game off the pace of Columbus' Giovanny Urshela (13) for the IL's longest active hitting streak. Refsnyder's run has lifted his average by 84 points (.190-.274). He entered the last road trip in a 4-for-30 (.133) funk, but has gone 16-for-39 (.410) since. Charlotte's Leury Garcia entered today with the IL's longest active on-base streak at 17 games.

HAIL CESAR: Cesar Puello went 1-for-3 and wore his team-high sixth bruise in just 14 games played. He is tied for the fourth-most bruises in MiLB. However, 15 of the other 16 in the top 17 have played at least 23 games. Since coming off the DL on April 26, he has gone 10-for-25 (.400), lifting his average to .350.

OFF THE RAILS: SWB has bashed 22 homers, a total that trails only Charlotte (26) in the IL...The RailRiders have also allowed 23 homers, the IL's third-highest total trailing only Durham (27) and Charlotte (25)...The team is on pace to allow 107 homers despite playing only divisional foes in mostly chilly weather, with 15 of its 31 games played coming at the cavernous PNC Field...Last year's unit allowed 65 home runs all season, trailing only Indianapolis (63) for fewest in the IL...The franchise has not allowed 107+ homers in a season it called PNC Field home since the 2011 team gave up a Yankees-era record 122...The overall franchise record of 154 came during the 2004 Red Barons season...The RailRiders woes with the bases loaded continued yesterday, going 0-for-5...They have gone 3-for-34 (.088) with no extra-base hits, two walks and eight strikeouts with the bases full...The hits have come from the since-demoted Lane Adams, Jonathan Diaz and Eddy Rodriguez.
