Gwinnett Stripers News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - The Rochester Red Wings (16-16) broke a tie game with a three-run bottom of the seventh and beat the Gwinnett Braves (16-16) by a 6-3 score Monday night in game one of the four-game series at Frontier Field.
The Red Wings grabbed the early lead as Buck Britton looped a bases-loaded, two-RBI single to center off Gwinnett starter Lucas Sims to open up a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
But in the top of the fourth, Ryan Lavarnway picked up a two-RBI double to right center, plating Adonis Garcia and Ronnier Mustelier, who had back-to-back singles, to tie the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rochester edged back in front, 3-2, on a triple to right by Britton and a sacrifice fly to center by John Ryan Murphy.
In the top of the fifth, the G-Braves battled back to tie the game for a second time, as Ozzie Albies led off with a ground-rule double to right-center. The 19-year-old shortstop moved to third on a bunt by Blake Lalli and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Emilio Bonifacio.
However, the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference. With Kanekoa Texeira (L, 1-1) relieving Sims to start the inning, Wilfredo Tovar was issued a one-out walk. A single to right by Stephen Wickens put runners on first and third and top-prospect Byron Buxton laid down a squeeze bunt for a single, scoring Tovar for a 4-3 lead. Sean Burnett replaced Texeira and gave up a two-out, two-RBI single to Max Kepler for the final margin.
Sims allowed three earned runs in 6.0 innings, walking two and striking out five. Texeria got just one out, allowing two hits and three runs, while also walking a batter. Burnett allowed one hit in 0.2 innings, registering a strikeout and Joel De La Cruz allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless eighth inning for Gwinnett.
Rogers yielded five hits to the G-Braves over his 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out two. Dan Runzler (W, 1-1) walked two and struck out two over 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Rochester and Buddy Boshers (S, 2) worked the final two innings to get the save.
At the plate for the G-Braves, Sean Kazmar Jr. went 2-for-4 to increase his hit-streak to five games. He has now has four multi-hit games in that span. Lavarnway was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Britton who was 2-for-4 with a run, a triple and two RBIs led Rochester and Buxton went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
The G-Braves and Red Wings continue the four-game series Tuesday night in Rochester. Right-hander Casey Kelly (1-0, 1.65) will start for Gwinnett, while Rochester has lefty Pat Dean (1-3, 3.00) scheduled to oppose him. Tony Schiavone has the call of the action beginning at 6:35 p.m. on 97.7 FM. First pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
