Toledo Splits Doubleheader with Louisville
May 9, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The first doubleheader of the Mud Hens 2016 season featured a split with the Louisville Bats Monday night. In a tale of two games, Toledo's offense and pitching dominated game one, as the Mud Hens (14-15) won 4-1, but Louisville turned the tables in game two pitching a shutout and knocking out 13 hits in a 3-0 victory.
In game one, both starting pitchers went the distance. Warwick Saupold pitched seven strong innings scattering four hits, allowing one run, and striking out four to earn his third win of the season for the Mud Hens. Robert Stephenson pitched six innings giving up seven hits, four runs, allowing five walks, and striking out two Hens batters.
Wynton Bernard got things going in game one with an RBI fielder's choice that plated Nate Schierholtz in the bottom of the second inning to put Toledo up 1-0. Toledo extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning when Nate Schierholtz drove in Steven Moya with an RBI single, and then one pitch later, Argenis Diaz lofted a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Chad Huffman. A four-run cushion was provided off the bat of Casey McGehee when he blasted his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Bats only run in the game came in the fifth inning, but Saupold shut the door, pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings.
Game two featured a stellar pitching performance from Louisville's Keyvius Sampson as he went six innings, allowing only two hits, and striking out six batters. The Bats' Jumbo Diaz came on in the bottom of the seventh to close things out.
Louisville notched three runs in the first two innings, which was all of the scoring for game two, as the Bats defeated the Mud Hens 3-0.
Pitching for Toledo in game two was Buck Farmer, who has seen limited action between Detroit and Toledo so far this season. Farmer went 2.2 innings allowing nine hits, three runs, and struck out three Bats. Pitching out of the bullpen for Toledo in game was Chad Bell, Drake Britton, and Preston Guilmet who all pitched scoreless innings.
Toledo is back in action Tuesday night against Louisville for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch at Fifth Third Field.
