International League Names Players of the Week
Published on May 9, 2016 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Toledo right fielder Steven Moya and Gwinnett pitcher Williams Perez have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 2-8. Moya is the first member of the Mud Hens to claim an IL weekly award in 2016, while Perez joins Aaron Blair (April 18-24) as the second pitcher from Gwinnett to be so honored this season.
STEVEN MOYA, Toledo Mud Hens IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Mud Hens right fielder Steven Moya hit .458 over the past week and led the International League with 11 hits, four doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI, eight runs scored, nine extra-base hits, 29 total bases, and an incredible slugging percentage of 1.208. After collecting three hits, including two doubles, in Monday's 6-2 win at Gwinnett, Moya added four hits with a double and two homers in Tuesday's 12-5 romp over the Braves. He also homered in both Mud Hens victories over Columbus this weekend to push his IL-leading home run total on the season to nine. Moya is also the League- leader in RBI and extra-base hits.
24-year-old Steven Moya is in his eighth season as a professional player since being signed by Detroit as an undrafted free agent in 2008. In 2014 he was named MVP of the Double-A Eastern League and Detroit's Minor League Player of the Year. He is a veteran of 20 big league games since 2014. Moya is a native of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico.
WILLIAMS PEREZ, Gwinnett Braves IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Braves right-hander Williams Perez tossed his first career shutout Friday, defeating Charlotte with a brilliant one-hit effort at Coolray Field. Perez walked just one and struck out seven in the 4-0 Gwinnett victory, which was the team's first complete-game shutout since last June. Perez had struggled in his first two starts since being optioned from Atlanta in April, but Friday he held the International League's third-highest scoring offense to a walk in the 2nd inning and an infield single in the 5th. The win lowered Perez's ERA with Gwinnett to 3.26 in three outings.
24-year-old Williams Perez is in his eighth season as a professional pitcher after signing with the Braves as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He has started 23 games for Atlanta since the beginning of last season, including three starts this April before being optioned. Perez is a native of Acarigua, Venezuela.
