Syracuse Mets News Release
Toledo, OH - The Syracuse Mets started strong but did not close out the game on Saturday night, falling to the Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A Detroit Tigers) by a 6-5 final on a sunny and pleasant night in northern Ohio. The three-game winning streak for the Mets was snapped in the loss.
Early on, Syracuse (14-12) brought the thunder at the plate. The Mets scored three times in the first and one more time in the second, powered as usual by an electric bat from Mark Vientos. On the first pitch he saw in the first, Vientos lined a double into right-center field that scored Danny Mendick for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Vientos laced an opposite-field single into right field that scored Carlos Cortes to make it a 4-1 lead at the time. Vientos finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with two more doubles. In his last two games, the Floridian is a combined 6-for-9 at the plate with four doubles.
However, as would become the theme of the game, every time the Mets tried to pull away, Toledo (16-9) had the answer. The Mud Hens scored once in the first on a Justyn-Henry Malloy solo shot and two more times in the second on a two-run blast from Jonathan Davis to make it a 4-3 game. Then, in the bottom of the third, Malloy doubled leading off the inning, advanced to third on an Andrew Knapp single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Davis, knotting the game up, 4-4. Malloy finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with the double, the home run, and two runs scored.
Syracuse went back in front in the top of the fourth when Khalil Lee doubled leading off the inning, moved to third on a Mendick single, and scored when Ronny Mauricio bounced into a double play. The 5-4 lead would prove to be the last of the day for the Mets, as the Mud Hens scored once in the sixth and once in the seventh to pull in front for good. In the sixth, Toledo utilized a leadoff triple from Davis and an RBI single from Jermaine Palacios to tie the game, 5-5. Then, in the seventh, two-out damage got the job done. Andre Lipcius walked and then scored when Donny Sands lined a sharp double that rolled all the way to the right-field wall for a 6-5 Toledo advantage.
Syracuse had a late chance to make a little magic, as a two-out, two-strike single from Mauricio kept the game alive in the top of the ninth. However, on the first pitch Vientos saw in his pivotal plate appearance, he bounced out to third base to end the game and the winning streak for the Mets. Syracuse's old Achilles heel showed up once again on Saturday night. The Mets left seven total runners on base. Syracuse has left 39 runners on the basepaths in this series.
Syracuse closes out its six-game series against Toledo on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
