Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies News Release
BULLIES REWIND: The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies went a perfect 4-0 last week by sweeping their opposition, and in the process claimed sole possession of first place in the North Division with 15 points. The Bullies will continue their season-high 7-game home stand this week as they battle Dayton on Tuesday, Wheeling on Friday, and South Carolina on Saturday.
Tuesday, Brett Nowak tallied a goal and three assists and Dustan Heintz recorded the first two goals of his professional career to lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 5-2 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays before 3324 at the North Charleston Coliseum. Heintz opened the scoring for Atlantic City just 4:02 into the game when he picked up Dan Peters' rebound in the slot and fired a backhand shot past South Carolina goalie Kirk Daubenspeck for a 1-0 lead and the first goal of his professional career. Defenseman Ian Walterson made it 2-0 at 8:54 of the first period, walking into the high slot and ripping a slap shot off the glove of Daubenspeck and into the back of the Stingrays net. The Bullies continued the onslaught in the second period as Novak opened the scoring 1:50 into the period on the power play as he slapped the puck through the pads of Daubenspeck for a 3-0 lead. Brian Fahey made it 4-0 1:36 seconds after the Nowak goal at 3:26 when he took a feed from Curtin in the slot and tucked the puck underneath Daubenspeck. Heintz would tally his second goal of the game at 14:31 of the second, taking a lead feed from Nowak and ripping a backhander over Daubenspeck's left shoulder to give the Bullies a 5-0 lead after two periods. Aaron Power tallied a power play goal at 9:42 of the third period and Jeff Boulanger scored at 14:20 to provide the scoring for South Carolina. South Carolina out-shot the Bullies 34-27. Bullies goaltender Jake Moreland stopped 32 shots to pick up his second win of the year. Atlantic City went 1-2 on the power play.
Wednesday, Paul Caponigri tallied the equalizer shorthanded with 55 seconds left in regulation and goaltender Jake Moreland stopped all 4 Charlotte shooters in the shootout to lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 4-3 shootout win over the Charlotte Checkers before 3274 at Cricket Arena. Jason Notermann got the Bullies (5-4-1-) on the board with a power play goal at 6:44 of the first period. Notermann ripped a slap shot from the right-wing circle that deflected off Charlotte goaltender Alex Westlund's pads and trickled into the net to give the Bullies a 1-0 lead. Notermann tallied a second power play goal at 11:31of the first when he picked up Brian Fahey's rebound at the top of the crease and slipped the puck underneath Westlund for a 2-0 advantage. Charlotte (5-1-1) would crack the scoreboard before the end of the period. Dan Preston from his own zone floated the puck to a streaking Eddie Pershin on the right side, and Pershin with a defenseman on his back hooked the puck around Moreland and tapped it into the net at 19:30 of the first to cut the deficit to 2-1. Charlotte's Matt Chandler netted the equalizer at 12:26 of the second period when his shot from the right-wing circle deflected off Moreland's glove and into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2. In the third period, Dusty Jamieson gave Charlotte the 3-2 advantage as he picked up the loose puck in the left circle and fired a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Moreland at 5:08. Caponigri though would net the equalizer with the Bullies shorthanded, tapping the c entering feed of Brian Fahey past Westland at 19:05 of the period to tie the game 3-3 and send it to overtime and a shootout. Charlotte out-shot the Bullies 32-28. Moreland made 29 saves to pick up his third win of the year. The Bullies went 2-6 on the power play. Notermann has now scored 6 goals this season, with all 6 coming by way of the power play.
Saturday, Jason Notermann recorded his third two-goal game of the season and Derek Edwardson notched a key goal on a two-man advantage power play late in the third period to lift the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 5-3 win over the Trenton Titans before 2347 at Historic Boardwalk Hall. Fraser Clair opened the scoring for the Bullies at 9:19 of the first period, slipping the loose puck through Trenton goaltender Andrew Allen's pads to give Atlantic City a 1-0 lead. Notermann made it 2-0 at 11:03 of the first when he took a centering feed from Brett Nowak behind the net at the right-wing circle and ripped a slap shot past an out of position Houle. Scott Horvath ended Houle's night at 1:05 of the second period, redirecting Vince Macri's point shot past the Trenton net-minder to give Atlantic City a commanding 3-0 lead. Trenton would strike back just 23 seconds later as Nick Deschenes redirected Matt Libby's shot from the near half-wall through Bullies goaltender Jake Moreland at 2:18 of the period to cut the deficit to 3-1. Notermann would find the back of the net again, this time on the power play as he curled into the slot and beat Trenton goalie Andrew Allen on the far side at 5:01 to give the Bullies a 4-1. However a pair of goals from Steve Cygan at 11:00 and Phil Lewandowski at 14:11 of the second brought the Titans to within 4-3 at the close of the period. Edwardson would give the Bullies some insurance in the third period as he fired a backhand shot from the slot over the right shoulder of Allen at 10:23 on a two-man advantage power play to make the final score 5-3. Atlantic City out-shot Trenton 35-34. The Bullies went 2-6 on the power play while holding the Titans to 0-3. Moreland made 31 saves to earn his fourth win of the year.
Sunday, Brett Nowak and Scott Horvath each tallied a goal and goaltender Jake Moreland stopped all 17 shots he faced to lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 2-0 victory over the Dayton Bombers before 1426 at Historic Boardwalk Hall. The win is the Bullies fourth in a row and gives Atlantic City sole possession of first place in the North Division with 15 points. Nowak would give the Bullies all the scoring they would need at 4:26 of the second period on the power play, taking a drop pass from Jason Notermann inside the right-wing circle and beating Dayton goaltender Andrew Penner to the far side for a 1-0 lead. Horvath tallied an insurance marker at 8:51 of the third period, beating Penner from the left-wing circle off the blocker. The Bullies out-shot Dayton 30-17. Atlantic City went 1-6 on the power play while holding Dayton to 0-4 with the man advantage. Moreland earned his fifth win of the year.
BULLIES "TOP DAWG" AWARD: Each Monday from now until the end of the season, Public Relations and Broadcasting Manager Dan Weiss will select the Bullies "Top Dawg" for the week. This week's winner is center Brett Nowak who tallied two game-winning goals and notched 7 assists in leading the Bullies to four consecutive wins. Honorable mention goes out to forward Jason Notermann who recorded four goals, including three on the power play, and added an assist.
WINNING WAYS ARE BACK: With four straight wins, the Bullies enjoy the longest active winning streak in the ECHL. Atlantic City has won four in a row for the first time since February 14-22 of last season. Three separate times last year the Bullies put together six consecutive wins, while going unbeaten in regulation over 13 games from December 12 to January 17.
WHITE HOT NOWAK: With 9 points in 4 games, center Brett Nowak had the most productive week for any Bullies player going back to Luke Curtin who tallied 9 points the week of January 4, 2004. Curtin notched three consecutive three-point games to lead the Bullies to a sweep of Johnstown, Dayton, and Roanoke.
TOP TRIO: The Bullies first line of Nowak, Curtin, and Notermann ranks as the top producing line in the ECHL with 39 points in 12 games. At that rate, the line will combine for 234 points this season. Last year's top line resided in Florida where the Everblades' trio of Brian McCullough, Brent McDonald, and Keith Anderson combined for 193 points. Of the three, only McCullough played the full 72 games.
IT'S OUR SPECIALTY: Atlantic City has tallied 6 power play goals over their last 20 attempts, a conversion rate of 30%. Meanwhile, the Bullies penalty kill has not given up a power play goal to the opposition since Tuesday in South Carolina. The Bullies have killed off 13 consecutive power plays and 16 out of the last 17. For the season, Atlantic City is 11th on the power play at 19.3%, and tied for 10th on the penalty kill at 85.5%.
GAME CHANGE REMINDER: Tomorrow's home game vs. Dayton was originally listed in the schedule as a Wednesday game. This is a reminder that the game will be played at 7:05PM tomorrow and not Wednesday.
BULLIES CONTINUE TO BRING ON THE WARMTH: The Bullies, in conjunction with the Salvation Army of Atlantic County, are currently hosting the second annual "Bring on the Warmth" coat drive, which runs through Friday, November 19 when the Bullies host the Wheeling Nailers. All fans that bring in a new or used coat in good condition will receive a voucher redeemable for a $1 Mezzanine Level ticket to any Boardwalk Bullies home game in 2004-05.
POWER PLAY FOR UNITED WAY: For a second consecutive season, the Bullies have teamed up with United Way to support the Power Play For United Way. For every power play goal the Bullies score in 2004-05, area businesses including Baumgardner Construction, RLS CopiScan, AtlantiCare, and Glenn Insurance will donate $10 to the United Way of Atlantic County. So far, the Bullies have tallied 12 power play goals, good for $480 towards Power Play For United Way.
