Titans undefeated streak ends
November 15, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans' winning streak was halted at six as they suffered their first two defeats of the season - one in a shootout and one in regulation.
On Wednesday, the Titans defeated the Johnstown Chiefs 3-2 in the shootout for the second consecutive game.
The Dayton Bombers came into Sovereign Bank Arena on Friday and handed Trenton their first loss of the season with a 4-3 shootout win.
On Saturday, it was the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies that gave the Titans their first loss in regulation 5-3 triumph down at Boardwalk Hall.
The Titans take their longest break of the season - 11 days - before taking the ice against the Long Beach Ice Dogs on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:00pm. It will be the first of five games that Trenton plays over the following six days.
LAST WEEK:
Wednesday, November 10 vs. Johnstown, 7:00pm W 3-2 (SO) Sovereign Bank Arena
- For the second time in five days, the Trenton Titans and Johnstown Chiefs played to a 2-2 tie at the end of 60 minutes. And for the second time in five days the two teams finished the overtime period scoreless. In an eerily similar script, Mathieu Brunelle scored the game-clinching goal for the 3-2 win, raising their record to a perfect 6-0-0. Phil Lewandowski tallied his second goal of the season at 5:22 of the first for the game's first lead. The Chiefs' leading scorer Brent Kelly tied the game by deflecting a lose puck from the side of the net off the pads of Titans' goalie Chris Houle. Mike James put Johnstown ahead 2-1 in the second period. In the final frame, it was Lewandowski delivered once again, tying the score 2-2. Chris Houle stopped four of five Chiefs' players in the shootout, while Lewandowski and Brunelle converted for the Titans.
Friday, November 12 vs. Dayton, 7:30pm L 4-3 (SO) Sovereign Bank Arena
- B.J. Abel's three-point night and Rick Kowalsky's heroics could not prevent the Dayton Bombers from defeating the Trenton Titans 4-3 in a shootout for their first loss of the season. Kowalsky's team-leading fourth goal assisted by Abel with 15.1 seconds left in the third period tied the score at 3-3 and sent the game into overtime. After the scoreless overtime, Bombers goaltender Andrew Penner stopped all five Titans shooters as Scott Cameron tallied the only goal of the shootout to clinch the victory. Tyler Kolarik's goal got the scoring started just 15 seconds into the first period and gave Dayton a 1-0 lead. Shawn Limpright and Phil Lewandowski also traded goals in the opening frame as the Titans skated into the first intermission trailing 2-1. In the third period, Abel deflected Evan Nielsen's wrist shot at 3:36 to tie the score 2-2. That would not last long as Preston Mizzi's one-timer deflected off a Titans defenseman and across the goal line to once again give Dayton a one-goal lead. Andrew Allen made 20 saves on 23 shots in suffering his first loss of the season. Abel finished the night with a goal and two assists as he extended his scoring and assist streak to five games.
Saturday, November 13 @ Atlantic City, 7:05pm L 5-3 Boardwalk Hall
- Jason Notermann had two goals as the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies handed the Trenton Titans a 5-3 loss, their first in regulation. Notermann's first even strength goal of the season put the Bullies up 2-0 11:03 into the first period as Trenton found themselves down early for the second night in a row. Scott Horvath made the lead three goals for AC when he lit the lamp 1:55 into the middle period. Andrew Allen came into game to replace Chris Houle who left the game with 11 saves on 14 shots. The Titans answered just 23 seconds later when Nick Deschenes deflected Matt Libby's wrist past Jake Moreland to make it 3-1. Notermann, however, put the Bullies back up by three with a power play goal at 5:01 of the second period. Steve Cygan helped cut into AC's margin with his first goal of the season, unassisted at 11:00. Phil Lewandowski pulled the Titans to within one goal as he made it 4-3 with his fourth goal over the last three games, but that's as close as Trenton would get. In the third period, Derek Edwardson helped seal the win with the second power play goal of the game for the Bullies, coming on a two-man advantage at 10:23. Moreland made 31 saves for his fourth win of the year. Allen turned away 19 in dropping his first decision during regulation.
