South Carolina Stingrays News Release
A week that began with a power outage at Tuesday night's game against the Columbia Inferno, turned around to be a 3-1-0 week for the Stingrays as they took wins against the Charlotte Checkers and the Reading Royals.
The Stingrays could not come back from a five-goal first period for the Inferno, despite a solid effort, and ultimately lost to Columbia 6-4.
On Thursday, the team faced their rival for the final playoff spot in the South Division and convincingly defeated the Charlotte Checkers 6-2 in Charlotte. Chris Chaput had two goals in the game and T.J. McElroy scored the game-winner with his seventh of the campaign.
Friday night the Reading Royals came to town. Davis Parley recorded his third shutout of the season stopping all 26 shots he faced. Goals for the Stingrays 3-0 victory came from Scott Romfo (5), Jarrett Konkle (6) and Matt Stefanishion (13).
Saturday in a repeat victorious performance, the Stingrays took down the Royals for the second game in a row. Cail MacLean back from the IR scored his 22nd goal of the season and Matt Stefanishion had the game-winner in the 3-2 victory.
Earning six of the eight points this week places the Stingrays two points ahead of the Charlotte Checkers in the race for the playoffs.
Team News:
The Stingrays are 30-23-7 for 67 points. The six points the team earned this week, coupled with Charlotte's loss to Gwinnett, places them two points ahead of the Checkers and just two points behind the Augusta Lynx. They remain in that last playoff spot in the South.
The Stingrays are 6th place in the conference and 11th in the league.
With the wins against Reading, the Rays remain undefeated in non-division play with a 4-0-0 record.
Roster Notes:
Donny Grover and Stephen Werner remain with the Hershey Bears.
Both Cail MacLean and Nate Kiser were activated off the IR this week. Kiser had a goal and a plus/minus rating of plus-2 in the win against Charlotte and MacLean had a goal in Sunday's victory over Reading.
Cam McCaffrey was called up to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. It's his first call-up this season.
Matt Reid will join the Stingrays in Florida after being sent back to the team today from the Hershey Bears.
Sasha Pokulok was placed on the 3-day injured reserve.
Tim Judy was released from the team prior to the trip to Florida.
