Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones (32-22-2-2) play four games this week, as they continue to lead the North Division of the American Conference of the ECHL. Cincinnati hosts Reading on Wednesday night (March 14) and Trenton on Friday (March 16) and Saturday (March 17). The week closes with a trip to Troy (Hobart Arena) against Dayton.
THE PLAYOFF SKINNY: The top five teams in the North Division will qualify for the Kelly Cup playoffs. The top three teams will receive first round byes, while the fourth and fifth seeds will play a best-of-three series starting no earlier than April 9. The winner of that series will meet the number one seed, while the second and third seeds battles in a best-of-five series beginning no earlier than April 13. The winner of those two series collide in the Divisional Finals in a best-of-seven series. The Division champion advances to the American Conference finals and meets the South Division winner in a best-of-seven. The winner of that runs into the National Conference champion in a best-of-seven for the Kelly Cup.
WEBER ASSEMBLING SOLID ROOKIE SEASON: Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber has assembled the best winning percentage of any rookie coach in the ECHL. Weber has directed Cincinnati to a 32-22-2-2 record (.586 winning percentage). That is .052 percent and three wins more than Rick Kowalsky, the Trenton coach.
ABOUT LAST WEEK...: The Cyclones got a goal in regulation time, an assist and a shootout goal from Mike Wirll in a 3-2 shootout win vs. Dayton Friday night (March 9). Barret Ehgoetz scored a goal in his fourth straight game and Dov Grumet-Morris stopped 37 shots in the first 65 minutes and turned aside four of five chances in the shootout to collect his eleventh win of the season. Saturday night (March 10), the Cyclones claimed a 4-1 triumph at Johnstown. Wirll netted a pair of goals and added an assist. Ehgoetz added a pair of assists and Greg Stewart and Jean-Michel Daoust added the other goals in the victory. Cedrick Desjardins stopped 27 shots in the triumph.
HE'S ON A WIRLL: Cyclones forward Mike Wirll leads the ECHL in goal scoring with 40, four more than Mike Pandolfo of the Trenton Titans. Wirll has scored nine times as a member of the Cincinnati squad since being acquired from Pensacola on Valentine's Day.
HOME, SWEET HOME: The Cyclones are 15-3-3 (.786 winning percentage) at U.S. Bank Arena since Nov. 18. Cincinnati is 10-0-3 in games played on the weekends (Friday, Saturday or Sunday) during this stretch of games (.885 winning percentage).
HOW ABOUT THOSE CYCLONES: Cincinnati has won back-to-back games, four of its past five games and eight of the last twelve.
MILESTONE FOR LISABETH: Saturday (March 10) was the 400th game in the professional career of Cyclones forward Travis Lisabeth. The sixth year pro from Langton, ONT was acquired from Pensacola on Feb. 14 and 124 goals and 147 assists for 271 points. He is the second-most experienced player on the Cincinnati roster behind Sam Ftorek (533 games).
DEITSCH ON RECALL: Cyclones center Jason Deitsch was recalled by Wilkes Barre-Scranton (AHL) last week. Playing in three games with the Penguins, the Cincinnati native collected his first goal in the AHL on Friday (March 9).
FAST FACTS: The Cyclones are 25-6-2 when scoring the first goal of the game...Cincinnati is 11-0-1 when opening a 2-0 lead in a game...Cincinnati is 24-1 when leading after two periods...The Cyclones are 24-7-2 when holding opponents to three goals or less...Cincinnati is 5-3-1 versus Reading this season, 2-3-1 versus Trenton and 6-3-1 against Dayton...The Cyclones have come from behind to win twelve times this season, twice at the expense of Dayton and once from Reading...Cincinnati has scored 21 power play goals in the first period of games in 2006-07 and has limited the opposition to just eleven man-advantage goals in the third period of games.
MAGIC NUMBER: The Cyclones, currently the leaders of the North Division, have a 'magic number' of 17 to make the Kelly Cup playoffs. Every Cincinnati win reduces the number by two, every shootout or overtime loss reduces it by one. Reading has the sixth-most possible points (88). Every time the team in sixth place loses a game--Cincinnati's number reduces by two and each time that team has a shootout loss that number reduces by one. As it gets closer to the playoffs different teams could move into that sixth position.
IN THE COMMUNITY: The Cyclones are active in the community Monday (March 12), as Cedrick Desjardins and Matt Macdonald visit Clermont Northeastern MIddle School. Greg Gallagher, Billy Irish-Baker, Matt Rogers and Brett Smith are bowling with the league at Stones Lanes on Montgomery Road this evening.
UNPACK THE BAGS, WE'RE GOING TO BE HERE A WHILE...: The Cyclones begin the week as the leaders of the North Division. Cincinnati moved into a share of the top spot on Dec. 23 and has not been moved from first place since (that's 78 days in a row for those of you following along).
DICKMANN'S MONDAY NIGHTS: Every Monday during the season, Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber and selected players will be at Dickmann's Sports Cafe (879 Orphanage Rd.--Ft. Wright, KY) from 7-8pm. This week, Barret Ehgoetz and Mike Wirll will be the guests. The show can be heard at www.dickmannscafe.com.
