NAILERS WEEK IN REVIEW
February 19-March 5
Wednesday, March 7 Wheeling 3 @ Toledo 1
Andrew Penner stopped 53 of 54 shots and propel the Wheeling Nailers to a 3-1 win over the Toledo Storm on
Wednesday. It marked the tenth time this season that the Nailers have been outshot in a game and won. After a
scoreless first period, Ryan Moren got things going on the power play. With Chris Blight in the box for tripping,
Moren picked top shelf on Dominic Vicari. Sean Collins and Paul Bissonnette were credited with assists at the 7:33
mark of the second. It was Moren's eighth goal of the season and sixth power-play tally. Eric Sonnenberg notched
his fourth of the year exactly six minutes later. Sonnenberg sent the puck from the corner towards the goal and
banked it in off the skate of Vicari. A Storm mistake sprung Collins on a breakaway in the third period. Toledo
turned the puck over at the Nailer blue-line and Jordan Cameron's pass sent Collins in on Vicari. As the back-
checkers dove after Collins he chipped it in on the backhand to increase Wheeling's lead to three. Matt Zultek
tipped a Gerry Burke shot through Penner with two minutes remaining in regulation. Penner also stopped a penalty
shot in the final minute to preserve the two goal cushion.
Friday, March 9 Wheeling 2 @ Johnstown 5
The twelfth and final meeting of the season between the Wheeling Nailers and the Johnstown Chiefs ended in a 5-2 Chief win Friday night at the Cambria County War Memorial. The Nailers took a 1-0 lead 7:32 into the first on the power play. With the Chiefs down a man for too many men on the ice, Jon Smyth tipped a Curtiss Patrick shot down and through the legs of Morgan Cey with just seconds remaining on the man advantage. It was Smyth's fifth of the season and second power-play marker. Wheeling's only lead lasted just 34 seconds and Geoff Waugh tied it at one. Grant Jacobsen was able to slide a puck through the top of the crease to Waugh who beat Andrew Penner for his first goal of the season and his professional career. Still in the first period, Jacobsen gave his team the lead while the Nailers were on the power play. He was able to bust through the Nailers defense and beat Penner on a breakaway with a backhand move. It was just the sixth shorthanded goal of the season for the Chiefs and the eighth that the Nailers have allowed. It would stay 2-1 until the 19:55 mark of the second period. Just as the Nailers finished killing off a penalty and seconds before the horn sounded, Jacobsen scored his second of the game. Jean Desrochers' shot was blocked by the Nailers defense but it was redirected onto the stick of Jacobsen at the doorstep. In the third the Nailers would make it interesting. While on the powerplay, Doug Andress tried to clear the rebound of a Ned Havern shot. Sean Collins knocked Andress' stick back and the puck rolled off and into the net. With
11:20 to go in the third, the score was 3-2. Johnstown responded quickly again. This time it was 27 seconds before the Chiefs regained their insurance. After a two-on-one in which Penner made the initial save, Dmitri Tarabrin was able to get his own rebound and put it in the net. Tarabrin scored his second of the game and 15th of the year just over two minutes later to seal the deal for Johnstown. Both Nailers goals came on the power play as they went 2 for
8. Johnstown was 0 for 5. Penner stopped 23 of 28 while Morgan Cey grabbed 20 of 22.
Saturday, March 10 Wheeling 2 @ Dayton 5
The Wheeling Nailers scored twice in the first nine minutes of the game but were unable to score again as the Dayton Bombers won 4-2 at the Nutter Center Saturday night. Both of the Nailers goals came within 1:06 of each other to change a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead. With the Nailers down a man, Justin Maiser registered his 15th goal of the year. Yanick Tifu, who had five points last week against the Nailers, slid a pass across the slot to Maiser for the tap in 2:41 into the first. Wheeling responded with a power-play goal of their own. Tifu was in the box for goaltender interference and the Nailers wasted no time on the advantage. It took them just six seconds of power-play time to win a faceoff, carry the puck into the zone and score. Sean Collins took a one-time feed from Ned Havern and deposited it behind Terry Denike to tie the game. Eric Sonnenberg's fifth of the year at 8:34 gave the Nailers their first and only lead. Shortly after a faceoff inside the Dayton zone, Sonnenberg let a slapper fly through the legs of Denike. The Bombers tied the game in the opening minutes of the second frame. Greg Labenski's shot from the blue line tipped off a couple of players in front, last touched by Paul Kelly, past Andy Franck. It was Kelly's 16th of the year at the 3:40 mark of the second. Despite 11 Nailers shots in the second they were held off the scoreboard and the third period began a tie game. The game winner came just 28 seconds into the final period. The puck bounced towards the blue line where it was met by a Labenski slapshot. The puck somehow found its way through a crowd in front and into the net. Brent Walton's empty net goal sealed the deal for Dayton with 57.3 seconds remaining. The Nailers outshot the Bombers 24-19 as Wheeling went 1 for 5 on the power play.
Sunday, March 11 Wheeling 3 vs. Dayton 2 OT
The Nailers, needing a quick start against the Dayton Bombers tonight, scored the game's first goal and the game's last goal in overtime to secure a 3-2 win over the visiting Dayton Bombers tonight at WesBanco Arena. Adam Edinger opened the scoring for the Nailers when he gathered a rebound and scored from a bad angle, putting the puck past Dayton goalie, Terry Denike. Jon Foster and Jon Smyth assisted on the play. The Bombers tied the game at one at 12:53 of the first with a power-play goal. Corey LeClair scored his fourth goal of the year on a two-on-one down low. LeClair easily beat Andrew Penner off a cross-ice feed from Justin Maiser. The Bombers added a second power-play goal with less than four minutes remaining in the opening period. Penner appeared to have the puck covered up just in front of his crease, but the referees allowed play to continue. The puck squirted free from the mass of bodies and came right to Mike Berry who flipped it in over the prone goaltender. The period ended with the Bombers leading 2-1. Sean Collins tied the game for Wheeling at 3:15 of the second with his 18th goal of the season. Collins skated down the right wing and threw a centering pass towards the net. The puck took a fortuitous bounce, deflecting off a Dayton defenseman's skate and past Denike. Ned Havern and Grant McNeill earned assists. The game remained tied throughout the third period and the teams went to overtime. Just 18 seconds into the overtime, Sean Collins took a pass from Paul Bissonnette and threw the puck at the net from the blue line. Ned Havern was stationed in front and deflected the shot past Denike for the game winning goal.
