Koci is 30th Former Nailers Player to Reach the NHL

Wheeling, WV- The Wheeling Nailers are proud to announce today that their ECHL leading 30th former player has played in the NHL.

David Koci, who played for Wheeling from 2001-2003, played for the Chicago Blackhawks in their 7-5 defeat of the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday.

In 2:31 of playing time, Koci recorded 42 penalty minutes that included three fighting majors and a game misconduct.

Coincidentally, the 29th Nailer to play in the NHL, Daniel Carcillo, picked up his first career NHL goal for the Coyotes in the same game.

Koci, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound defenseman, played in 81 games for the Nailers over his two seasons. He scored two goals, added five assists and racked up 208 penalty minutes.

The native of Prague, Czech Republic was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round (146 overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

After playing for the Nailers, Koci played the next two full seasons and part of a third with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL.

In 159 games with the Baby Pens, he scored two goals and added 16 assists while recording 668 penalty minutes including a career high 311 in 2004-2005.

The big man began this season with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. In 39 games this year, he had one assist and 212 penalty minutes.
