February 9, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - Travis Morin scored a rare 3 on 5 short handed goal to take the lead for short handed goals in the ECHL, but it wasn't enough as the South Carolina Stingrays fell 4-2 to the Texas Wildcatters at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"It was tough to find any rhythm," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "That's what happens when there are so many penalties being called throughout the entire game."
The South Carolina Stingrays welcomed in the number one team in the ECHL as the Texas Wildcatters came to town. In the first period, the Rays got an early power play, but the Wildcatters turned that into an early lead. Kevin Baker took an arrant pass and scored on a break away. The short handed goal made was unassisted and made it 1-0. Later in the period, Pierre-Luc O'Brien got his 8th of the year on the power play from Marty Guerin and Sean Collins to tie the game up at one.
In the second period the Wildcatters got another quick goal, this one coming at 1:03 from John McNabb to give Texas the 2-1 lead. That lead would become 3-1 on a power play goal by Michael Grenzy, his first of the season at 14:14. Travis Morin would make it a 3-2 game when he took advantage of a miscue by Texas goaltender Jeff Pietrasiak and scored an unassisted short handed goal. The goal was Morin's 22nd of the season and was his 5th short handed goal, which leads the ECHL. The Rays now have 13 short handed goals this season which the entire ECHL.
In the third penalty Colin Nicholson scored the only goal, making it a two goal game. The Rays pulled goaltender Davis Parley with a minute to go, but were unable to get any closer as they fell by a final score of 4-2.
The winning goaltender was Pietrasiak who stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Parley who stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced. The Rays went one for nine on the power play while killing off ten of the eleven short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action tomorrow afternoon for the first Dog Days of Winter. Kids under 12 get in for just 5 bucks and you are invited to bring your dog to the game. The Rays will welcome in the Wheeling Nailers for the only time this season. Game time will be at 4:00 P.M.
