Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - Mike Ayers supplied the shut out and Lee Falardeau scored two goals in his return to the line up as the Charlotte Checkers defeated the Pensacola Ice Pilots, 4-0.
In the first period, Chris Capraro fired a shot on Ice Pilots netminder, Cam Ellsworth that was fought off. The goalie, however, couldn't control the rebound and defenseman Kenny Smith darted in and fired the puck into the net scoring the first goal of the contest at 5:29.
In the second stanza, Dusty Jamieson skated down the right wing boards and lifted a wrist shot over the glove of Ellsworth at 10:11 giving Charlotte a 2-0 lead. Only a few moments later, Lee Falardeau would extend the Checkers lead when he sent the puck past the Ice Pilots netminder at 10:52. This gave Charlotte a 3-0 advantage after forty minutes.
Pensacola was unable to mount any sort of comeback and Falardeau would add one more goal at 15:38 of the final period giving Charlotte a 4-0 victory.
Notes: Mike Ayers stopped all 32 shots that came his way as Ellsworth turned aside 31 of 34...Only the Checkers scored a power play goal as both teams had three tries.
