Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - John Lammers scored a hat trick with all three goals for Idaho and Kellen Briggs shut out Alaska for the first 59:50 before settling for a 3-2 victory in front of 4,956 Friday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces managed just six first period shots and fell behind for good when Lammers whistled a wrist shot past Derek Gustafson only 8:17 into the game. Lammers scored again off the rush three and a half minutes later with the Steelheads on a power play, and the defending Kelly Cup champions, who eliminated Alaska in last year's conference finals, led 2-0 at the break.

Desperate to beat Briggs, Alaska got caught up ice and gave up a two-on-one coming the other way, which Lammers converted after a centering pass from Lance Galbraith to put Idaho up 3-0 with 2:47 left in the second period. The score remained that way until the game's final minute, when the Steelheads took back-to-back penalties and Matt Robinson ended the shutout bid with 9.9 seconds remaining on the ensuing five-on-three power play. Kimbi Daniels scored seven seconds later to pull the Aces within a goal, but the final 2.9 seconds elapsed without another shot fired against Briggs, who finished with 29 saves.

Robinson has scored five goals over his last three games for Alaska, which has lost seven of its last nine games overall (all against West Division opponents) and is under .500 at home since beginning the year 9-1 in Anchorage. Idaho (26-14-7) has won nine of its last 11 and climbed to within four points of West leader Victoria, a loser in Bakersfield Friday.

The Aces (21-18-5 overall) have dropped four straight to their West Division rivals since winning the first two meetings this season heading into tomorrow's match-up at 7:15 p.m. Sunday's series finale begins at 5:05 p.m. and features the Fred Meyer post-game "Skate with the Aces." All regular season games are broadcast live on Alaska's flagship station, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to face-off.
