Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (25-19-4) matched a season high with three power play goals and picked up 29 saves from goaltender Justin Peters to snap their four-game losing streak and earn a 4-1 win over the Augusta Lynx (25-20-4) on Saturday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 5,990.
Right from the opening puck drop, the Everblades showed they were playing with purpose on this night. The Everblades out-shot Augusta 18-3 in the opening 20 minutes and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The game's first goal came with the Everblades on the power play at 13:39.
The play developed because of a nice play by Ernie Hartlieb who pinched up from the blue line to force the puck back down below the Augusta goal line. From there Kirk MacDonald cycled the puck to Preston Callander, who then fed Derek Damon in the right corner. Damon walked to the side of the net and lifted the puck up over the arm of Augusta goaltender Bobby Goepfert for his 18th goal of the season and 10th on the power play.
The Everblades expanded their lead midway through the second period with their only even strength goal of the night. Jarret Lukin collected his fourth goal of the season at 10:29 of the frame after taking a nice drop pass from Mike McLean just inside the blue line. Lukin then walked to the top of the right circle before unleashing a wrist shot that tipped off the glove of Goepfert and into the net. David Cornacchia added the second assist on the tally that opened a 2-0 Florida lead.
Less than a minute later, while on the power play, the Everblades tacked on their third goal of the night and chased Goepfert from the game in the process. Just 35 seconds after Lukin's goal, Brandon Roach let fly a one-timer from the blue line after a nice pass from Damon in the right corner. The shot sailed through traffic and into the back of the net at 11:04 for a 3-0 lead. MacDonald added his second assist of the night on Roach's ninth goal of the season. After the goal, the Lynx lifted Goepfert for backup goaltender Gerald Coleman.
The Lynx got in on the power play goal fun after Chase Watson registered a 5-on-3 power play marker at 13:37 of the second period to cut the Everblades lead back down to two goals. The tally was Watson's 8th of the season and was assisted by Ken Scuderi and Matt Christie.
The Everblades however answered back with their third power play goal of the night just one minute and fifteen seconds after Augusta's tally on Callander's 10th goal of the year. Callander was the recipient of a rebound off Coleman's pads after the Lynx net-minder stopped Damon's shot from the top of the right circle. Hartlieb also notched an assist on the goal which regained Florida's three-goal lead, which the Everblades would carry into the second intermission along with a 37-19 shot advantage.
The third period was dominated by the penalty killers as both teams combined for eight power play opportunities, but neither team registering a goal. The Lynx put the pressure on, out-shooting the Everblades 11-5 in the frame, but Peters locked down the back end and stopped not only all 11 shots he faced, but a penalty shot by Igor Pohanka in the final minute as well.
Peters improved his record to 17-10-2 with the win and Goepfert suffered the loss and saw his record drop to 12-8-1 after allowing three goals on 30 shots he faced in the 31:04 he played. Coleman finished out the night in relief and stopped eight of the nine shots he faced.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 3-for-11, while the Lynx finished 1-for-8.
