Devils Stopped by Dayton, 1-0

Trenton Devils News Release
DAYTON, OH - In a game which never really seemed to get off the ground, the Trenton Devils dropped 1-0 to the Dayton Bombers at the Nutter Center. Although Trenton had several early chances, Rejean Beauchemin was perfect for his second shutout of the season.
After surviving a shootout with Cincinnati last night, the Devils could not get the offense started against the Bombers. But for 28 minutes, Dayton couldn't get anything going, either. A fitful first frame would sum up the contest: neither side capitalized on opportunities or had strong possessions.
The lone goal of the game came off the stick of Ryan Smyth, who was set up by a feed from Grant Goeckner-Zoeller. Goeckner-Zoeller, planted in the near-side corner, pushed the puck towards Smyth for a one-timer past goaltender Jason Smith. The goal came 8:54 into the second frame.
The strongest plays of the night came with the gloves off, when both Thomas Harrison and Joe Rooney handily defeated their opponents in mid-ice altercations. Harrison handled Britt Dougherty so efficiently that Alex Greig blindsided the Devils forward to pull him away. After that, Joe Rooney slammed Masahito Nishiwaki to the ice after leveling several strong right hooks into the Japanese forward.
Jason Smith took a tough-luck loss, making 25 saves on 26 shots, while Rejean Beauchemin stopped all 19 pucks he saw.
The Trenton Devils are now set up for a pivotal matchup with the Johnstown Chiefs in Pennsylvania Sunday, February 10 at 5:05pm. The teams are currently knotted at 41 points and are tied for the final playoff spot in the North Division.
