Stingrays Drop 4-3 Shootout Thriller to Johnstown

Johnstown, PA - The South Carolina Stingrays (31-13-4-5) fired 42 shots on goal, but fell 4-3 in the shootout to the Johnstown Chiefs (13-26-5-3) in front of 1,528 at Cambria County War Memorial Arena Saturday night. Stingrays forward Gregg Johnson continued his scoring streak potting a goal and an assist in the loss.

After a scoreless opening period, Chiefs rookie Troy Schwab lit the lamp at 11:17 of the second frame beating Stingrays goaltender Shane Connelly with a snap shot over the left shoulder from the top of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Trevor Hendrix and goaltender Kris Mayotte earned assists. The Stingrays tied the game with two seconds left in the period off a drive from forward Trevor Buress at 19:58 from defenseman Grant Farrell.

The Stingrays grabbed a 2-1 lead at 2:51 of the third period off the blade of forward Dain Prewitt beating Mayotte over the left shoulder. Johnson registered the only assist. The Chiefs tied the contest moments later with Schwab's second of the game at 3:10 from defensemen Dan Gendur and Russ Sinkewich. Forward Sean Berkstresser gave the Chiefs a 3-2 lead with an unassisted tally at 6:25. The Stingrays tied the game back up on the power play at 7:23 with a goal from Johnson from forward Trent Campbell. The tied stood through overtime and the game moved to a shootout. Campbell and Johnson both found the net for the Stingrays, but rookie Connor Shields, forward Chanse Fitzpatrick and defenseman Greg Gallagher all beat Connelly for the win. Connelly finished the night stopping 29 of 32 Chiefs chances. Mayotte earned his sixth win of the season kicking away 39 of 42 Stingrays shots. The Stingrays finished the contest 1-for-4 on the power play while the Chiefs went 0-for-1.
