Chiefs Dismantle Stingrays

Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs snapped a 13-game home losing streak by defeating the South Carolina Stingrays Saturday night by a score of 4-3 at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.

After a scoreless first period the Chiefs got on the board first midway through the second period. Trevor Hendrikx sent a sizzling pass up the ice to Troy Schwab. Schwab took the puck and sniped it in top shelf at 11:17 with Kris Mayotte getting the second assist to earn himself a two-game assist streak. The Chiefs almost got out of the period with a 1-0 lead but the Stingrays were able to jab one in with two seconds left. Trevor Breuss scored on a wrap around with Grant Farrell getting the assist.

The Stingrays took the lead early in the third period with Dain Prewitt scoring at 2:51 and Gregg Johnson registering the assist. The Chiefs fought back and were able to answer quickly. Schwab was able to smack in a bouncing puck for his second goal of the game. Dan Gendur and Russ Sinkewich registered the assists with the goal coming in at 3:10. A few minutes later the Chiefs were able to take the lead while four-on-four. Sean Berkstresser scored his 13th goal of the season as he swatted the puck in from the side of the net at 6:25 with Troy Schwab knotting the assist. The Stingrays tied it up once again at 7:23 while on a four-on-three power play. Gregg Johnson potted his 14th of the season with Trent Campbell registering the assist. The game remained tied at the end of regulation.

The two teams dueled in overtime but there were no goals and the game went into a shootout.

After five shooters the totals were two and two in the shootout. Campbell and Johnson score for the Stingrays and Connor Shields and Chanse Fitzpatrick scored for the Chiefs. The Stingrays sent out Dain Prewitt as their sixth shooter and he was stoned by Mayotte. The Chiefs sent out Greg Gallagher who put a move on former Chief Shane Connelly and fired it in left side to win the game.

Mayotte made 39 saves in the victory. The Chiefs went 0-for-1 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to Johnstown on Sunday, February 14 against the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7:05. The Chiefs will holding a coloring contest for kids in attendance sponsored by BIC. Kids can pick up the drawings at the Chiefs' information table and color them at the game. The best judged coloring will get a great Chiefs prize.
