The Elmira Jackals extended their first place lead in the American East Division to three points on Saturday night, defeating the Reading Royals 3-2 at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pa. Elmira extended its point-earning streak to seven games, and has not lost in regulation since the all-star break.

The Jackals took a 1-0 lead at 4:14 of the first period, getting their seventh short-handed goal of the season. Justin Donati took the puck up the left wing boards, and fed Matt Lowry at the top of the crease who tipped the puck past Royals goaltender Matt Dalton to give the Jackals the advantage.

Elmira increased its lead to 2-0 at 6:46 of the first. Lowry fed Brendan Connolly in the right wing circle, and Connolly's wrist shot slipped past Dalton for his third goal in two games.

The Royals jumped back into the contest in the second period, when Andrew Sarauer sent a puck past Ellis 42 seconds in to make it 2-1 in favor of the Jackals.

The Jackals regained the two-goal lead minutes later, on a play started by Joe Grimaldi. Grimaldi lifted the puck ahead to Justin Donati who came in all alone with his brother Tyler Donati. Justin fed Tyler who one-timed it past Dalton to make it 3-1 Jackals at 5:13 of the second.

In the third period, the Royals made it a one-goal game, when Charlie Kronschnabel took a feed from Ben Gordon in front and drove the puck in at 13:06 of the third period for a short-handed goal to make it 3-2.

The Royals had a flurry of chances late in the game, but Ellis made a few crucial saves including one on Ryan Cruthers with eight seconds left in the third period, and the Jackals held on to win 3-2.

Ellis made 29 saves on 31 shots for his tenth win with the Jackals this season. Dalton fell to 14-15-0-2 with his 27 save performance on 30 Jackals shots.

The win was the Jackals fifth of the season against the Royals, and the Jackals sixth in the last seven overall games. Elmira improved to 24-17-3-2, while Reading's record dipped to 23-20-1-3.

The Jackals are at Trenton on Sunday at 1 p.m., taking on the Devils.
