Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - In a Friday night contest, the Victoria Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies met in the second game of a three-game series at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Salmon Kings gave Leland Irving the nod in goal, while the Grizzlies started Mitch O'Keefe.

Captain Wes Goldie sent the Salmon Kings surging out of the gate when he netted the game's first two goals. The first came as Gary Gladue dumped a shot into the Utah zone where the puck took an odd bounce off the backboards. Goldie picked up the lying puck and wrapped it around the net to finish off the goal. Goldie's second marker was scored when he picked up a rebound in the slot and buried it past O'Keefe. The goals were his 29th and 30th of the season. The Salmon Kings took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The Salmon Kings' Irving made a spectacular save midway into the period as he lay on his side and lifted his left pad to kick away a sure goal. Utah did, however, beat Irving moments later as a quick shot by Ryan Kinasewich deflected off Lance Galbraith and snuck through the pads of the Salmon Kings' goaltender. The goal was Galbraith's sixth of the campaign. Victoria restored their lead at 19:11 as Wes Goldie completed the hat trick when he collected the puck in the neutral zone, walked it into the zone and blasted a shot past O'Keefe. The goal was Goldie's 31st of the year. Utah would respond 25 seconds later as Vlady Nikiforov notched his 10th of the season as he took a pass behind the Kings' net and slipped the puck via the wrap around goal into the back of the net. Victoria held a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

The Grizzlies tied the game at the 11:04 mark of the final frame when Tony Romano was on the doorstep to poke toss the puck into the net after a point shot was knocked down in front. The goal was Romano's fifth of the year. Neither team could light the lamp the remainder of the way and the game went to overtime.

Both teams were unable to score in the overtime session as the game had to be completed in the shootout. Utah's fourth and fifth shooters A.J. Perry and Brett Parnham were the only players to score in the shootout as O'Keefe denied all four Salmon Kings shooters he faced. Utah 4 Salmon Kings 3 in a shootout.

Victoria went 0/4=00.0% on the power play, while Utah was 1/4=25.0%. The Salmon Kings outshot the Grizzlies 36-34.

The Salmon Kings and Grizzlies finish their three-game set tomorrow night with puck drop for the game at 7:05 p.m. During the game the Salmon Kings will continue the silent auction of Chad Painchaud's and Adam Taylor's game-worn "Pink in the Rink" jerseys with all proceeds donated to the BC Cancer Foundation. The Vancouver Island Brewery will be on hand at tomorrow's game to present their "Find the Keg" second intermission promotion. For tickets, call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
