Steelheads Win Fifth Straight, Top Aces 2-1
December 3, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID- John Swanson broke a tie with less than six minutes remaining in the third period to propel the Idaho Steelheads (10-4-5) to their fifth straight win; a 2-1 win over the Alaska Aces (10-7-1) at Qwest Arena in the first game of a three-games-in-three-nights set. The win was preserved by goaltender Mike Zacharias, who stopped 25 of 26 shots for Idaho. Zacharias has made eight straight starts in net for Idaho, and is 6-1-1 over that time.
The Aces went on the board first when Steve Ward punched home a rebound with Alaska on the power play to give the Aces a 1-0 lead at 17:57 of the opening period.
The Steelheads tied the game at 17:19 of the second period when Kael Mouillierat- named ECHL rookie of the month earlier in the day- won an offensive zone faceoff to defenseman Mike Gabinet at the left point. Gabinet- returning to the Idaho lineup after a one-game call-up to the American Hockey League's Abbotsford Heat- wasted no time in ripping a wrist shot through traffic an into the Alaska goal; Gabinet's second of the season made the game 1-1 after two periods.
John Swanson scored the eventual game-winner for Idaho at 14:15 of the third period when he capitalized on a turnover by Alaska's Chris Langkow, darted through the center of the ice on a breakaway, and scored on a shot into the top corner. The unassisted goal was the fifth of the season for Swanson, an all-star a season ago for Idaho.
Mike Zacharias stopped 25 of 26 shots in the win; he improves to 6-1-2 for Idaho, and is victorious for the fifth straight game. In the current five-game win streak, Zacharias has held opponents to just one goal in three of the five wins on the current streak. Gerald Coleman suffered the loss for Alaska, as he stopped 21 of 23 pucks in net for the Aces. He is now 7-6-1 for Alaska.
The Steelheads and Aces play the next two nights- Friday and Saturday- at Qwest Arena.
