Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV ‚¬" Ben Street's three point performance helped lead the Wheeling Nailers to a wild 6-5 shootout victory over the Kalamazoo Wings Friday night at WesBanco Arena. The win, coupled with Cincinnati's loss to Florida, propels the Nailers to first place in the North Division.

The Nailers were held without a shot for the first 16:17 of the opening period, but scored on their second and third shots of the game. The first came off the stick of Mikael Bedard, who scored off his own rebound on the short side post. The second came when Nick Petersen fed a pass in the slot to Ben Street, who ripped it past the glove of Wings goaltender Ryan Nie, giving Wheeling the 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

Kalamazoo got on the board 5:11 into the second period on a goal by Brady Leisenring. The Nailers assumed a two-goal lead once again on the power play, as Sebastian Bisaillon squeezed a slapshot between the post and the body of Nie, to make the score 3-1. However, the Wings received back ‚¬"to-back goals from Ryan McGinnis, tying the game at three. McGinnis finished with four points on the night.

The Wings took the lead 4-3, early in the third on Justin Taylor's third of the season. Wheeling responded on Alexander Smigelski's third goal in the past two nights, which tied the game at four. Kyle Bushee registered a goal against his hometown team, tipping in a shot in front at 14:23 lifting the Nailers to a 5-4 lead. The see-saw battle continued, as Kalamazoo's Trent Daavettila scored late to tie the game at five, forcing overtime.

Both teams had their chances in the extra session, but neither could seal the game sending things to the overtime shootout. The Nailers scored on their first two shooters, as Nick Petersen and Ben Street were able to beat Nie on shots. Wheeling goaltender Patrick Killeen took care of the rest, stopping all four Kalamazoo shooters faced in the shootout to secure the 6-5 win at home.

Wheeling will battle the Gwinnett Gladiators next Friday and Saturday (Dec. 10 & 11) in Johnstown. Game time for both contests is 7:35 p.m. The first 2,500 fans to walk through the gates at the Cambira County War Memorial on Saturday, will receive a free Dave "Killer" Hanson bobblehead.
