December 3, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA ¬" The Reading Royals of the ECHL (2nd Atlantic Division, 12-7-0-024), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, defeated the Elmira Jackals (1st Atlantic Division, 11-5-4-026), 6-1, at Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. Reading scored early in the first and never trailed in the team's third straight victory over the Jackals (3-3-0-0). The Royals are 9-2-0-0 in the team's last eleven games and 11-3-0-0 in the last fourteen. Goaltender Ben Scrivens (win, 5-3-0-0, 25/26) won his fourth consecutive game for the Royals. Elmira's Marco Cousineau (loss, 7-4-4-0, 20/25 in 33:51) started and sustained the loss; Zane Kalemba (no decision, 7/8 in 26:07) came on in substitution for the Jackals after the Royals' fifth goal. Reading did not score on their lone chance with the man advantage (0-1). The Royals' PK kept the opposition's power play off the board for the first time in four games (0-4).
Reading scored 3:34 into the game when Matt Generous fired one from the right point that went off Cousineau's blocker and in for Generous' first of the year. 14:02 into the first, Reading got what proved to be the game winner off the rush. Matt Caruana fed Andrew Sarauer, who carried into the right circle and fired. Cousineau made the stop, but the rebound fell to the top of the crease, where Yannick Riendeau swooped in, took control, cut left-to-right across the goal mouth and back-handed the puck back in against the grain for his second of the season. 3:15 after that, Reading dumped the puck into the right corner while the Jackals were in the middle of a line change. The puck went below the goal line but stayed outside the trapezoid, so Cousineau could not play it, allowing Ben Gordon to skate in and take possession. Gordon fed Ryan Cruthers at the right side of the net, and Cruthers ripped one on. Cousineau made the stop, but the rebound fell to the left side of slot, where Eric Castonguay stepped up and buried it for his fifth of the year.
In the second, the Royals got further insurance when Devin Timberlake stole off the forecheck and got the puck to Rob Slaney, who slid it into the low slot, where Casey Haines split the D and chipped one through for his fourth of the year 9:37 into the second. 13:51 into the period, Gordon set in the right circle for a cross-ice pass from Ryan Cruthers. Gordon didn't get great wood on the shot but the ¬Ëchange-up' appeared to fool Cousineau and slipped through his right side for his sixth of the year.
In the third, Elmira finally broke through when Patrick Coulumbe fired an aerial back-door feed from the right circle that hit Kevin Devirgilio in the shin pad as he skated towards the left side of the net and deflected behind Scrivens to break up the shutout 3:15 into the third. Four minutes later, Reading added another hard snap shot from Castonguay out of the right circle, but by that time the damage had been done, as the Royals ran the team's record to five games over .500 for the second time this season.
The Royals travel to Sun National Back Center in Trenton, New Jersey, tomorrow (Saturday, December 4, 2010 @ 7:00) to face the Atlantic Division rival Trenton Devils.
