Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads and Alaska Aces faced off in the first of a three-game series tonight at the Bank of America Centre, and the visitors skated off with the 3-2 shootout win. The 4,609 fans who came out on Scott Burt bobblehead night, cheered Idaho through four periods of hockey, but in the end had to settle for one point. The Steelheads are now 3-4-1 against the Aces this season, and 51-24-4 all time.

Joe Talbot put the Aces on the scoreboard first. Just three-minutes into the game, he caught Idaho's netminder Blair Allison out of position and found the back of the net. Idaho scored the equalizer on the power play at 15:47 when Brett Draney knocked in his seventh of the year. Defenseman David Cornacchia, who was re-assigned to Idaho today from AHL Utah, fed a beautiful pass through traffic to Jeff Bateman. Bateman took the shot from the left circle and Draney redirected it past Aces goalie Dan Murphy.

Alaska came out shooting in the second period, literally. Despite being outshot 15-4 and being shorthanded four times in the middle frame, Idaho hung on. The second period ended as it began, with the two teams tied at one apiece.

With a little more than two-minutes remaining in the game, Dylan Gyori gave Idaho a one-goal lead, and what looked like the game-winning goal. However, Alaska tied it just 16 seconds later. Jordan Cameron beat Allison, sending the game to sudden-death overtime.

Idaho managed to kill off a double minor during overtime period, to force a shootout. Though Allison stopped the first five shots, the Aces goaltender did the same. The sixth, and only successful, shot by Alaska's Mike Jones turned out to be the game-winner.
