Late heroics lift Aces
February 25, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho â Jordan Cameron forced overtime with 1:47 left to play in regulation and Mike Jones notched the game-winner in the shootout as Alaska rallied past Idaho 3-2 before 4,609 Wednesday at the Bank of America Centre.
Alaska jumped out to the early lead as Joe Talbot flicked in a rebound just 3:03 into the first period. Idaho tied the game with 4:13 left in the opening frame, as Jeff Bateman's wrist shot from the right circle deflected off teammate Brett Draney and just inside the goalpost. The Aces dominated much of the second period and had four power plays while outshooting the Steelheads 15-4, but the score remained 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Idaho had the upper hand for much of the third period, holding a 14-5 advantage in shots, and took its first lead with 2:03 left in the game as Dylan Gyori beat Alaska goalie Dan Murphy, who was caught out of position while scrambling for a rebound. But just 16 seconds later, the game was tied again, as Cameron snapped a wrister from the left circle top shelf on Blair Allison, who has won just one of his five starts against the Aces.
Alaska fired all five shots in overtime and enjoyed almost four minutes of power play time following a double minor for high-sticking assessed against Gyori, but Allison held sway to force the shootout. Murphy stopped all five Idaho attempts to claim his fourth straight shootout victory, while Jones beat Allison in the fifth and final round to give the Aces their fifth win in eight meetings with the third-place Steelheads (31-16-7) this year.
Alaska (30-20-4) has reached the 30-win plateau for the first time since the 1999-2000 season and looks forward to two more chances to gain ground on Idaho, Friday and Saturday night at 5:00 AST. Friday's rematch will be broadcast live on KHAR 590 AM, while Saturday's series finale returns to KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. All three games begin at 5:00 p.m. AST. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
