Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads lost 3-1 to the South Carolina Stingrays in the first-ever meeting between the two teams at the Bank of America Centre tonight. Idaho was up one-to-nothing midway through the second period, but that was all the team could score. South Carolina continues its dominance over Pacific Division teams, improving to 4-1 (W4-2 @ LB; W5-4 SO @ SD; L1-2 @ BAK; W4-1 @ FRE; and W3-1 @ IDH).
The loss marks Steelheads goaltender Blair Allison's first at home this season (on the season he's now 18-8-6). Idaho's record falls to 33-17-7, third place in the ECHL's Pacific Division, and 9 points back from the first place San Diego Gulls (who beat Pensacola in overtime tonight).
Both goaltenders were perfect through the first period, with Allison stopping 14 shots and South Carolina's Kirk Daubenspeck disallowing 12 Steelheads attempts. On the night Idaho outshot South Carolina 43-37.
At 12:05 of the second, Idaho got on the board when David Cornacchia scored on the power play. Dylan Gyori fed the All-Star defenseman with a cross-rink pass and Cornacchia scored on a one-timer from the point. South Carolina's Chris Allen notched the next two tallies, giving the Stingrays a one-goal lead by the end of the period. He scored the first from the blue line on a two-man breakaway at 15:49, and the second came at 18:16 when he got a shot past a screened Allison with a two-man advantage.
The Stingrays improved its lead just 41 seconds into the final frame when Robin Gomez' wrister got by Allison. Idaho's netminder blocked the shot with his chest, but the puck took a funny bounce over his shoulder, fell behind him and trickled in the net.
