Louisiana IceGators News Release

Columbia, SC – The Louisiana IceGators played their first game of an eight game road trip tonight in Columbia, SC. The IceGators (39-16-2) gave up the lead twice in the game and eventually dropped to the Columbia Inferno (36-18-6) 5-3. The IceGators are still in the lead in the Central Division with 80 points.

The Gators struck first, early in the first period, when Rod Sarich fired a blaster from the point that beat goaltender Josh Blackburn. Jamie Johnson and Kenny Corupe assisted.

Bobby Brown made the score 2-0 on the power play with backhand shot that beat Blackburn high to the glove side. Brown pounced on a rebound to score his 31st of the year. Ben Storey added to his power play tally with the first helper and Rod Sarich earned his second point of the period with the second assist.

Columbia cut the lead to 2-1 when Barrie Moore redirected a shot on the power play and beat Gators netminder Derek Gustafson.

Ben Storey scored his 18th of the year with a blaster from the blue line, off a feed from Kenny Corupe.

Columbia pulled within one goal for the second time when Jessie Shultz put the puck past Gustafson through a screen.

The Inferno scored two goals in the second period to take a lead they would not relinquish. Columbia pulled even on an early goal by Barrie Moore, his second of the game. The Inferno tallied the go-ahead goal late in the period for the 4-3 lead.

Josh Blackburn kept the Gators from scoring for the final 40 minutes of the game. The Inferno kept a 4-3 lead into the third period and capped the game with an empty net goal at the 19:36 mark of the third period.

This was only the seventh time of the season the IceGators have lost when leading after one period. The IceGators will travel to Greenville for back-to-back games against the Grrrowl on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game is at 6:05 p.m. and Sunday's is at 2:05 p.m.
