Peoria, Ill. (March 5, 2004) – Colin Hemingway registered the fourth hat trick by a Rivermen player this season, as Peoria defeated the archrival Toledo Storm 5-2 before 4,020 on Friday night at Carver Arena.

Hemingway, who also had an assist, and Tyler Rennette, who had four assists, each collected four points. It was the third and fourth time a Rivermen player tallied four points in a game this season.

Hemingway's hat trick goal came at 7:20 of the third period, giving Peoria a 5-1 advantage. On a 5-on-3 power play, Rennette rifled a shot on goal from the left face-off circle that Toledo goaltender Jimi St. John stopped with his right pad. Hemingway was just off the left goal post and chipped the puck behind St. John and up into the right corner. It was Hemingway's eighth goal in a Rivermen uniform.

The Storm picked up their second tally of the night at 13:01 of the third to complete the scoring. After an initial save by Peoria netminder Levente Szuper, Landon Bathe flipped in his third goal of the season from just off the right goal post.

Peoria (34-16-8, 76 points) has won four in a row overall and three straight at Carver Arena, improving to 16-11-3 at home. Toledo (21-28-8, 50 points) is winless in its last five games (0-3-2) and dropped to 10-13-4 on the road.

Szuper stopped 23 of 25 shots in his 12th win of the season (12-7-1). St. John stopped 49 of a Rivermen season-high 54 shots in his sixth regulation loss of the year (1-6-2). Peoria had 53 shots in their home opener on October 18 in a 2-1 overtime loss.

Toledo took a 1-0 lead at 7:23 of the first period. Morten Ask, who darted from the left wing corner to the side of the Peoria goal, fed Marco Charpentier, whose wrist shot from the top of the goal crease just slipped between the arm and the torso of Szuper and trickled into the net. It was Charpentier's sixth tally of the season.

There were three first period fights. Newcomer David Kaczowka, who was reassigned from the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers on Monday, duked it out with Bryce Charpentier at 2:58, knocking him to the ice with a left. At 7:13, Ken Goetz then tussled with Bathe in the first of two fights for Bathe. Another newcomer Jason Norrie, who was also acquired on Monday as the future considerations in the Malcolm MacMillan trade on February 24, fought Bathe, earning the decisive win.

The Rivermen tied it 1-1 at 5:04 of the second. Tyler Rennette fed Adam Edinger for a one-time shot at the top of the left face-off circle. His shot deflected off the stick of a Toledo defenseman over the glove hand of St. John. It was Edinger's 17th tally of the season.

Peoria took a 2-1 lead at 9:17 of the second on Hemingway's first of the night. Edinger won a face-off to Hemingway at the right side of the left face-off circle. Hemingway hopped around a defender and shoveled a one-handed backhand shot just inside the left goal post. It was Hemingway's sixth goal in a Rivermen uniform and first of two in a row in the session.

The Rivermen made it 3-1 at 14:30 of the middle stanza on Hemingway's second tally of the game. Edinger fed Hemingway down the left wing on a breakaway. As Hemingway was cutting toward the goal, he was tugged at by a Toledo defender leaving him with one hand on his stick, but Hemingway was able to flick the puck underneath a sprawling St. John.

Peoria pushed its lead to 4-1 at 2:27 of the third. Norrie dumped the puck in from the left wing. The puck ricocheted out of the corner right to the left face-off circle, where Randy Rowe rifled a low slap shot toward the Toledo goal that just trickled through the legs of St. John and across the goal line.

Tomorrow – Saturday, March 6 – the Rivermen host the archrival Storm in the second of two in a row. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Carver Arena. "Jars of Clay" will perform in a post-game Christian concert, and the first 5,000 fans receive a Rivermen Team Photo, courtesy of Mac's and Big Foot Convenience Stores.
