Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (45-25-3-4, 97 Points) were defeated by the Houston Aeros (32-32-5-7, 76 Points) 3-2 on Saturday night in front of 6,302 fans at Cedar Park Center. Houston left wing Robbie Earl scored two goals as the Aeros improved to a 3-6-1-0 record against the Stars in the State Farm Lone Star Face-off. Texas forward Travis Morin scored a goal and added an assist in the team's 12th loss at home this year, marking the end of the Stars' five-game winning streak. Texas goalie Brent Krahn (17-4-0) stopped 29 of 32 Houston shots in the loss. Aeros goalie Darcy Kuemper (2-0-0) made 21 saves in the win. Texas continues the State Farm Lone Star Face-off at home against the San Antonio Rampage on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:30 PM.
After a scoreless first period, Houston opened the scoring at 1:24 of the second frame with a goal from forward Peter Zingoni. Maxim Noreau fired a shot to the net from the left point and Zingoni redirected the puck past Stars goalie Brent Krahn for the 1-0 Aeros lead. Texas countered just 1:02 later with a power-play strike. Defenseman Andrew Hutchinson muscled a shot from the blueline, beating Houston goalie Darcy Kuemper on the stickside and tying the game 1-1. The power-play tally was Hutchinson's ninth goal of the year. Forwards Perttu Lindgren and Travis Morin assisted the goal. At 12:37 the Aeros jumped ahead 2-1. Winger Robbie Earl found a rebound in the Texas crease and shuffled the puck past Krahn on the gloveside. Houston forwards Tony Hrkac and Jon DiSalvatore both tallied assists on Earl's ninth goal of the season.
The Aeros increased their lead to 3-1 with a power-play tally, 2:02 into the third period. Earl tipped in defenseman Ryan Gunderson's shot from the blue-line, adding his second goal of the night and his 10th goal this year. At 5:31, Texas cut Houston's lead to 3-2 when center Travis Morin sent a shot past Kuemper in the crease. Ned Lukacevic set up Morin's 21st goal of the season.
Prior to the game, Texas recalled center Kevin DeVergilio from the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL. DeVergilio scored 18 goals and added 20 assists for 38 points in 48 games with the Steelheads this season. In all, he has played in nine games for Texas this year, recording one assist, 12 penalty minutes and a -2 rating. The 23-year old forward is in his rookie season after a four-year career at St. Lawrence University from 2005 to 2009. DeVergilio recorded 113 points in 143 NCAA games for the Saints.
