Connecticut Whale News Release

Springfield, MA - Brodie Dupont scored a pair of goals, and Andres Ambuhl and Derek Couture had a goal and an assist each, to lead the Hartford Wolf Pack to a 6-1 over the Springfield Falcons Saturday night at the MassMutual Center.

With the win, and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' 3-1 home loss to the Portland Pirates, the Wolf Pack moved to within five points of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Justin Soryal and Dale Weise also scored for the Wolf Pack, and Chad Johnson made 30 saves. Jordan Eberle scored the only Springfield goal, and Bryan Pitton made 25 saves in the Falcon net.

The Wolf Pack got a quick jump in the first period, scoring on two of their first three shots on Pitton.

Dupont opened the scoring at the 47-second mark, on a deflection of a Lee Baldwin shot. Paul Crowder fed the puck to Baldwin at the left point, and Baldwin's low drive created the tip opportunity for Dupont, and earned Baldwin his first pro point in his third game with the Wolf Pack.

Soryal made it a 2-0 Wolf Pack lead 2:10 later at 2:57, getting his fifth of the season. Couture broke into the Springfield zone on right wing and threw the puck into the goalmouth, where both Soryal and Chris McKelvie were crashing, and Soryal jammed the puck past Pitton.

Eberle put Springfield on the scoreboard on a power play at 6:52 of the second period, on a fortunate bounce. Eberle partially fanned on his shot at the left-wing side of the crease, but Dupont, trying to block the shot, deflected it off of Johnson's blocking glove and into the net.

Weise got that one back for the Wolf Pack at 10:21, as he came out of the penalty box. As a Falcon power play was ending, Ambuhl grabbed the puck near the Wolf Pack goal crease and fed it all the way to Weise at the Springfield line. With a step on the Falcon defense, Weise broke in and put a shot through Pitton's legs to make it 3-1.

That goal gave Weise a four-game goal-scoring streak, which ties his own Wolf Pack season high, and extended his personal pro-high point-scoring streak to seven games. Weise has six goals and three assists for nine points during the run.

The Wolf Pack then widened the advantage to 4-1 with 43.4 seconds remaining in the period, three seconds after a power play expired. Couture, only on the power play because Weise was serving a fighting major, scored from the slot for his 10th goal of the season.

Kris Newbury played the puck off the right-wing boards to Couture between the hash marks, and Couture's snap shot beat Pitton over the catching glove.

That assist extended Newbury's Wolf Pack season-high assist streak to seven games, during which he has 10 assists, and Corey Potter also picked up an assist on the play, stretching his AHL career-high assist streak to five games (0-6-6).

The Wolf Pack made it a 5-1 lead 1:58 into the third period, as Ambuhl buried a centering feed from Ryan Garlock, and Dupont completed the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 18:26.

The win put the Wolf Pack back above .500, at 33-32-6-5 for 77 points, and it was only their second win in their last 10 road games (2-6-1-1). The Wolf Pack's next game, Wednesday night at the XL Center vs. Worcester (7:00), is their game-in-hand on Bridgeport, and if the Wolf Pack win that one they will be only three points behind the Sound Tigers.
