Adirondack Phantoms News Release
ALBANY, NY - Rookie Erik Gustafsson scored his first career pro goal and added an assist, while Danny Syvret returned from injury and also had a goal and an assist in the Adirondack Phantoms 4-2 loss to the Albany River Rats on Saturday night at the Times Union Center.
The Phantoms handed professional and AHL debuts to three players during the game as right wing Mario Valery-Trabucco (Union), center Chris Clackson (Western Michigan) and goaltender Brian Stewart (Northern Michigan) all suited up with the Phantoms for the first time.
Adirondack got an early lift in the game when River Rats defenseman Zack FitzGerald picked up a hooking penalty just 27 seconds into the game. The Phantoms created a couple of scoring chances, but could not get the puck past goalie Justin Peters. Albany then received a power play and during the advantage Jacob Micflikier was sent free on a breakaway behind the defense. He was hauled down from behind by a Phantoms defenseman, and referee Ian Croft award Albany a penalty shot. MicFlikier took the chance and skated wide on Stewart and lifted his shot over the right pad of Stewart and into roof of the net for a penalty-shot power play goal at 5:09. Adirondack responded well and out-shot the River Rats 12-5 overall in the frame, but remained down 1-0 at the end of the period.
In the second period Albany doubled their lead when enforcer Brad Herauf slipped behind the defense for another breakaway, skating wide to beat Stewart to the far left post at 13:39. In the closing seconds of the period Adirondack found themselves scrambling to try to clear a loose puck, only to have Rats rookie Zac Dalpe bury a rebound with six seconds remaining on the clock for a 3-0 lead.
The Phantoms attempted a comeback in the third period, beginning with Danny Syvret's first AHL goal since December 13th, blazing a shot past the blocker of Peters at 8:44, assisted by Jared Ross and Erik Gustafsson during a five-on-three power play. Syvret, who had not played since suffering a separated shoulder on January 12th while playing for the Flyers against Dallas, later set up Gustafsson for the rookie defenseman's first career pro goal at 19:46, which cut the lead to 3-2. Adirondack tried a last ditch effort to tie the game by pulling Stewart for an extra attacker, but with 0.8 seconds left Steven Goertzen scored an empty net goal to give Albany a 4-2 win.
Justin Peters recorded 27 saves on 29 shots for his 25 with of the year, helping Albany improve to 42-28-3-5 and clinch 2nd place in the East Division. Brian Stewart finished with 22 saves on 25 shots in his first ever AHL action, including a stunning glove save while lying on his side during the second period, but Adirondack dropped to 31-39-3-4 on the season. The Phantoms out-shot the River Rats 29-26 and both teams went 1-for-5 on the power play.
With all 40 of their road games completed, Adirondack returns to Glens Falls for a three-game home stand to close out the 2009-10 season. The Phantoms will host the Binghamton Senators on Wednesday, April 7th for a 7:00 pm face off at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
