Albany River Rats News Release
ALBANY, NY- The Albany River Rats clinched the second seed in the East Division on Saturday night with a 4-2 victory over the Adirondack Phantoms in Game 11 of the Time Warner Cable Cup series in front of 6,743 fans at the Times Union Center. Though their first round opponent has yet to be determined, the River Rats announced after the game that they will host Game One of their 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs first round series on Wednesday, April 14th.
Jacob Micflikier, Brad Herauf and Zac Dalpe scored in the opening two periods to give Albany a 3-0 lead heading into the third. Danny Syvret spoiled River Rats goalie Justin Peters' shutout bid with 11:16 remaining in regulation, and Eric Gustafsson brought the Phantoms to within a goal in the final 14 seconds of action, but Steven Goertzen sealed Albany's win with an empty net tally at 19:59.
Micflikier opened the score sheet with a penalty shot marker at 5:09 of the first period, courtesy of Joey Mormina's hooking penalty on the preceding breakaway. Mike McKenzie notched a point in the second period of his professional debut, springing Herauf on a breakaway at 13:39 to give Albany a 2-0 lead. Dalpe then added his sixth goal in just his seventh professional game to give the River Rats a three goal cushion at 19:54, banging home a wrap-around feed from Jerome Samson during four-on-four action.
Peters stopped 27-of-29 shots faced in the game to earn his 25th win of the season, as Albany improved to 42-28-3-5 this season. Adirondack goalie Brian Stewart allowed three goals on 25 shots faced and took the loss in his professional debut, as the Phantoms dropped to 31-39-3-4 this year. Adirondack out-shot the River Rats 29-26 in the contest, while both clubs went 1-for-5 on the power play.
Albany's regular season docket concludes with a pair of road games next weekend, starting on Friday night in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 7:05 p.m. The River Rats then head to Glens Falls for the 12th and final game of the Time Warner Cable Cup series on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. 2010 Calder Cup playoff packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
