Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - The Grand Rapids Griffins surrendered a 2-1 decision at the hands of the Abbotsford Heat at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Saturday, wrapping up both a back-to-back set and regular season series against their North Division rivals.

The Griffins (31-38-2-4) will return to Van Andel Arena on Wednesday night to host the Rochester Americans for a 7:00 p.m. face off.

Abbotsford (37-29-5-6) took a 1-0 lead with a power play goal in the waning seconds of the opening period. Oliver Latendresse was on the right boards when he centered a pass to Shawn Weller, who battled through net-front traffic to put in a backhand shot from the left side of the crease at 19:17.

In the middle frame, the Heat took a 2-0 lead at the 9:44 mark. Colin Stuart entered the Griffins' zone on the right wing side, and took a wrist shot that found its way through the legs of a Grand Rapids defender before beating the glove of Tomas McCollum.

Grand Rapids notched their only goal of the night at 16:33 of the third period. Brandon Wong broke into the Abbotsford zone and fired a shot from the right circle and after the rebound kicked out to the opposite side of the net, Brad May gathered the puck to score his second goal in as many games.

The Heat displayed a strong defensive performance to keep Grand Rapids from tying the game in the final minutes, holding on for a 2-1 win.
