Abbotsford Heat News Release

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - The Abbotsford Heat played one of their best all-round games of the season and the 4.664 fans in attendance showed their appreciation on Fan Appreciation Night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre Saturday as the Heat defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 2-1 to finish off their inaugural American Hockey League season on a winning note. The Heat finished the season with a 37-29-5-6 record and a berth in the 2010 Calder Cup playoffs.

Shawn Weller and Colin Stuart scored in the win, while Brad May replied for the Griffins in the loss.

David Shantz sparkled in the Heat goal, playing shutout hockey for 56 minutes of the game. Shantz turned aside 27 of 28 shots Griffins' shots fired his way. The Heat fired 35 shots at Griffins goaltender Thomas McCollum.

Weller gave his team a 1-0 lead late in the opening period. Weller was able to take a pass out in front of the goal, fight pass a Griffins defender and slide the puck under McCollum on the power play to give the Heat the lead

Stuart gave the Heat a 2-0 lead when his high, hard shot from the top of the face-off circle beat McCollum cleanly mid-way through the second period.

May, a veteran NHLer and former Vancouver Canuck, was able to break Shantz's shutout bid with less than four minutes to play in the third period. May picked up a rebound and deposited the puck under the Heat goalie for his fourth goal of the season.

The Heat qualified for a 2010 Calder Cup playoff berth with a 4-3 win over the Griffins on Friday. Saturday's game marked the final regular season home game for the Heat in their inaugural AHL season.

Abbotsford will now head out for a three game road trip to finish their regular season before embarking on their Calder Cup playoff run.
