B-Sens in hunt with solid finish to the weekend
April 3, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -The Binghamton Senators complemented Friday's win vs. Wilkes-Barre with a strong effort against Norfolk (37-33-3-3, 80 pts.) Saturday as they cruised to a 5-3 victory. Second period physical play and crisp passing proved to be the difference makers against division foe Norfolk as Binghamton improved their record to 34-34-5-3 (76 pts.), keeping playoff hopes alive.
Norfolk struck first 8:04 minutes into the first period with a shot from the top of the right circle by Matt Lashoff, assisted by Dana Tyrell and Adam Hall. B-Sens net minder Mike Brodeur was able to get a piece of it, but not enough as the puck trickled in on his right side.
The Senators bounced back with a goal coming just 34 seconds into the second period by Martin St. Pierre as a four-on-four, a result of matching unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, carried over from the first period. The goal was assisted by Brian Lee and Geoff Kinrade. St. Pierre's goal kicked off a flurry of B-Sens offense.
Jim O'Brien tallied his third goal in as many games at the 5:25 mark while Kaspars Daugavins put the Senators up 3-1 just over the mid-way point in the period. At 12:16 Yannick Tifu added even more insurance for the B-Sens, scoring his second goal of the season.
Norfolk entered the third period search for a comeback. Mark Parrish scored with just over five minutes remaining in regulation as his shot from the top of the right wing circle found the back of the Binghamton net. The Admirals would score again at the 16:30 mark of the period with a goal by Matt Fornataro to pull within one.
The Senators sealed the fate of the Admirals though as Ryan Keller found an empty net on the power play with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation.
The B-Sens are now off until Wednesday as they travel to Glens Falls, N.Y. to face the Adirondack Phantoms.
