Senators Veto Admirals Comeback Attempt

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Hours after returning to the Admirals from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Matt Lashoff and Mark Parrish each found the back of the net. However, the Norfolk Admirals (37-33-3-3) could not complete a comeback from a three-goal deficit as they fell to the Binghamton Senators (34-34-5-3) 5-3 on Saturday night at the Broome County Veteran's Memorial Arena. The Admirals will visit the Hershey Bears tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. in their final road game of the 2009-10 regular season.

Elsewhere in the AHL, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers fell 3-1 to the Portland Pirates. The Sound Tigers, who are in fifth place in the Atlantic Division, maintained a two-point lead over Norfolk in the battle for the East Division's final playoff spot. Norfolk has a game in hand on Bridgeport and will use that up tomorrow in Hershey. By AHL rule, if the fifth-place team in the Atlantic Division has more points than the regular season's fourth-place East Division club, the Atlantic Division team will cross over into the East Division Semifinals, knocking the East Division club from post-season play.

Matt Lashoff gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead 8:04 into the game with his eighth game of the season. Lashoff sent a wrist shot from the right point that Senators goaltender Mike Brodeur thought he had trapped beneath his pads. However, the puck slid underneath him and trickled across the goal line.

The Senators used a four-goal outburst to take a three-goal lead after two periods. Former Admiral Martin St. Pierre put Binghamton on the board just 34 seconds into the second stanza. St. Pierre skated around an Admiral whose stick had broken in the right faceoff circle and sent a wrist shot from the high slot through traffic and past a screened Dustin Tokarski.

Binghamton took a 2-1 lead less than five minutes later. Jim O'Brien found a rebound in the crease and sent a backhand shot past the right leg of Tokarski at 5:25.

The hosts doubled their lead just over five minutes later. Josh Hennessy got the puck behind the goal line and sent a pass behind his back to Kaspars Daugavins who was stationed near the goalmouth to Tokarski's left. Daugavins chipped a shot under the left arm of Tokarski at 10:59.

The Senators scored their fourth unanswered goal in the second period less than two minutes later. Yannick Tifu sent a shot from the left half wall that snuck past Tokarski at 12:16 for a 4-1 Binghamton lead after two periods.

The Admirals mounted a comeback in the final frame, out-shooting the Senators 14-5 in the third period. It began with 5:42 remaining after Nick St. Pierre sent a shot from the right point that bounced off Brodeur into the left circle. Mark Parrish found the rebound and sent a backhand shot into the net for his sixteenth goal of the season.

Norfolk used a power play goal with 3:30 left to draw within a goal of Binghamton. Matt Fornataro sent a shot from the left point through a screen that eluded Brodeur for Fornataro's tenth goal of the season and closed the score to 4-3 in favor of Binghamton.

However, penalty trouble ended any hopes of an Admirals comeback, as Parrish was whistled for holding with 1:34 left and Lashoff was whistled for elbowing with 1:16 left. Ryan Keller iced the victory for the Senators with an empty-net, power play goal with 14 seconds remaining.

Dustin Tokarski (29 shots, 25 saves) took the loss in his eleventh consecutive start. Mike Brodeur (42 shots, 39 saves) earned the win.

Both teams were 1-4 on the power play.

The Admirals will play their final road game of the 2009-10 regular season tomorrow as they visit the Hershey Bears at 6:00. The game will air on STAR 1310-AM, star1310.com and ahllive.com.

The Admirals will conclude their 2009-10 regular season next week with a three-game homestand beginning Wednesday against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
