Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers announce today that the Peoria Rivermen the AHL affiliate of the St. Louis Blues have loaned defenseman Trevor Byrne to the Nailers.

Byrne, 25, has appeared in 36 games this season for Peoria before being put on the IR with an injury. In those games he recorded two goals and 15 assists with 22 penalty minutes.

The 6'3" 205 pound native of Weymouth, Massachusetts is in his third professional season, spending the majority of the time with Worchester of the AHL. He was the 5th selection (143rd overall) of the St. Louis Blues in the 1999 Entry Draft.

Byrne played four years at Dartmouth College before turning pro. As a senior, he served as Dartmouth's captain, graduating as the school's all-time leader in games played (130). He was named to the New England Hockey Writers' All-Star Team and to the All-ECAC Second Team.

Player/Assistant Coach Terry Virtue was Byrne's defensive partner in his rookie season with Worchester, and had this to say about what he brings to the team. "He is a pretty skilled guy, who has good hands, skates well, and plays the puck well. He will be a good addition to our team who has had short numbers on defense recently".

The Nailers go on the road this weekend starting against Dayton on Friday and heading to Johnstown on Saturday, catch all the action on B2 Networks. The Nailers have clinched a spot in the Kelly Cup Playoffs, get your playoff ticket package today.
