Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and the Las Vegas Wranglers met for a mid-week showdown at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for the first time this season. Victoria defeated Las Vegas in Overtime in their last match up two weeks prior in Nevada, but tonight the Wranglers roped in the 6-2 win in game one of a three-game series.

The Las Vegas power play took the lead in the first period at 1:54 when Victoria native Sean O'Connor threw the puck to the crease from the right circle and got a deflection through the five-hole of Netminder B.J. Boxma.

O'Connor gave the Wranglers a 2-0 lead with his second goal of the night at 14:33 into the first. The 6'3" Forward finished a 2-on-1 with a backhander from the left of the net.

Less than two minutes later, at 16:12 in the period, Centre Matt Dzieduszycki scored his 30th goal of the season with a feed from Winger Steve Crampton and stunned the Salmon Kings with a 3-0 lead.

With 11 seconds left in the first, Steve Lingren fired a pass from Mike Josephson and rippled the mesh to put the Salmon Kings on the board. Lingren scored his 21st goal of the season to maintain the status of league-leading goal scorer as a defenseman, and his 14th power play goal to remain league-leading power play goal scorer as a defenseman.

Las Vegas padded the lead in the second period with their second power play goal of the night. With one second remaining in the power play, Marco Peluso beat Boxma for his 29th point of the season.

The Wranglers third power play goal of the night gave them a 5-1 lead 3:41 into the third period. Dzieduszycki tallied his second marker of the game.

Victoria Veteran Steve Roberts capitalized on a rebound with 3:56 remaining in the game for his seventh goal of the season and 13th point in 20 games played.

Dan Tudin added a late goal in the third to round out the game 6-2 for the 43-10-6 Las Vegas squad.

Victoria was 1-5 on the power play and Las Vegas scored on three of their six attempts with the man advantage. Marc Magliarditi earned his 30th win of the season, and Boxma was handed his twelth loss of the season. Las Vegas out shot Victoria 30-23.

Game two between Victoria and Las Vegas lights up Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, following the presentation of the Pemberton Holmes Player of the Month award for February to Assistant Captain Steve Lingren.
