Royals Toppled In Toledo, 3-1

Toledo, OH - The Reading Royals (34-16-7=75) scored the game's first goal early in the first period but from that point forward couldn't solve Toledo goaltender, Drew MacIntyre, who made 35 stops-many in spectacular fashion-to run his personal record to 5-0-0 against the Royals with a 3-1 win over Reading. Cody Rudkowsky (18-6-3, 34/36) was equally good as his continuing wizardry gave the Royals a chance to win, but Reading failed get a "w" for seventh consecutive time against the Storm, dropping to 0-3-4 against Toledo since December 3, 2005.

Reading struck first when Mike Kompon, who was just returned to the Royals on this same day from the Binghamton Senators, was sent breaking into the offensive zone on a two-on-one with Dany Roussin. Kompon, who was on the right wing side carried the puck deep into the right circle and fired a snap shot that beat MacIntyre low to the stick side. Kompon's shot appeared to hit the left pipe and pop into the air, but a back-checking defender for the Storm swiped the puck out of mid-air and knocked it right back into the net to give the Royals a 1-0 lead 5:01 into the game. The Storm came back to tie the game at one at the 9:30 mark of the second period while Toledo was skating with a five-on-three advantage. The Storm moved the puck around the perimeter until Chris Blight set up low in the left circle and fired a shot that went off the shaft of the stick of a Royals' defender-completely changing directions to a point that was unreachable for Rudkowsky. Toledo got all they would need at the 18:16 mark of the second period when a Reading miscue at the left point resulted in a break for Toledo's Scooter Smith, who carried the puck deep into the right circle and fired a high snap shot that beat Rudkowsky to the glove side. The Storm added an empty netter with 1:06 but the real damage was done well before that point-as MacIntyre repeatedly repelled the Royals' attack with a season's worth of highlight reel stops.

The Royals return to the Sovereign Center on Friday night (March 10) to take on the Storm again. On that night, the first 2000 fans through the doors will receive the fourth (in a series of five) package of player trading cards, commemorating the fifth anniversary season of the Royals, courtesy of Rieck's printing. Royals' game day broadcasts can be heard on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata and www.royalshockey.com with pre-game beginning 30 minutes before the opening face-off.
